725715 2008-12-04 03:14:00 Although the majority are exported there is still some available for the NZ market. Smaller butchers will buy via sales, larger groups like the supermarkets buy on contract and through stock agents.

I worked in the rural sector for about 20 years driving Sheep trucks & trailers. When I was driving we had three deck sheep/single deck cattle trucks and trailers taking about 600-650 lambs to the meatworks, but now my brother's company has 4 deck sheep/2 deck cattle and takes over 800 lambs per load.

On Two years driving Road Trains in Australia we carried larger numbers than NZ ever will.

I even love mutton; the older the better. My sister and I used to fight over the skin that formed in the kettle of it as it was cooling off in the fridge. Yummy!

725717 2008-12-04 03:51:00 I don't know if we do have any NZ lamb over here.

You get better NZ lamb in London and Paris than you do in Wellington or Auckland. And you pay about the same too.

Unless you own a farm.

Most NZrs don't like lamb. Too fatty and tastless. A 2-tooth hogget gives far better tasting meat than lamb. :)

And you get a decent feed off them as well.

It is either a 2 tooth or a hogget it can't be both at once.

725720 2008-12-04 04:26:00 Yes it can. If it's 2 tooth it MUST be a hogget, unless it's a very old ram which has lost most of it's teeth. Richard (739)

I hope you are not a farmer Richard.

A hogget is a one year old
A 2-tooth is 1.5 to 2 years
