837782 2009-12-09 02:14:00 My windows XP won't start. I shutted down the computer yesterday, today when I turn the computer on i get:

*Start in safe mode

*start windows normally

When I try to start windows normally it gets to the windows xp logo screen with the status bar that moves around and "loads" but then there is a blue screen that looks like some hardware malfunction error; the same for boot using last known good configuration settings.

So I decided to perform a clean installation of the Windows XP system. Insert CD, the program checks hardware drivers, then format the disk into NTFS system, and copies the files over to the disk. The problem is , after self reboot, it goes back to checking the hardware - format disk - copy files cycle again! The actual installation never happened.

One:
The actual BSOD will tell us a LOT more about what the problem is.

Two: You should have tried Safe Mode, if Safe mode works, its not a hardware problem.

Three: It reboots and if you select Boot from CD then it will just keep doing the same initial part, you have to let it continue.

Four: Chkdsk may have found file structure corruption - that will give certain BSOD messages, cause Windows not to boot and has nothing to do with hardware. It can be fixed by booting off the CD, Choosing Recovery Console and running chkdsk /p/r

Then you may or may not need to do a REPAIR install, not a full install.

If your drive is failing you should run Seagates disk diagnostics on it - the full check, that will tell you - unless its a controller error, in which case you'd for sure know about it because it the BIOS would keep saying there is no drive.

837783 2009-12-09 19:10:00 The harddrive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10.

This is the error message I get after rebooting the PC (after copying the files over from the CD):

PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Root Agent.

No idea what these means...

Go into the BIOS and make the boot order CD then HDD.

837785 2009-12-09 21:06:00 I've got CD first, HDD second boot sequence set already in the BIOS dragon_ball (15499)
837786 2009-12-09 21:50:00 I had a similar problems and the cause of it was bad cable, not a HDD. :)
You will be so mad if you consent on wiping all your data from this world and then find out that it was not necessary.. I did.

If you have that, then you will boot from CD - means new install process every time.
Set the HDD to go first then CD second.
Weeell this is just my understanding and I am not too good with computers so I don't know :)

if everything is working fine you do not need to do that.

The windows installation CD checks your hard drive before it loads. If it detects that your drive has nothing on it, it will immediately load Windows XP setup.

If it does detect anything, it will display a message "Press any key to boot from CD....." and give you 5 seconds to do so.

When you are wanting to install Windows on a drive that already has Windows, you must press a key to start the setup. However, when it reboots, you must NOT press a key. Then setup will load from the hard drive instead and continue.

(of course as I said, that's only if things are working 100%)
