837716 2009-12-09 02:11:00 I was ripping the ONLY copy of a precious cd on a brand new Sony CD/DVD ROM-WRITER and all of a sudden I heard the sound of a siren - not the swimming kind - but the kind on police cars and then - WHAM!!!

I broke the seal of a brand new SONY (WARRANTY VOID IF THIS SEAL IS BROKEN/REMOVED ) and took out all the glass shardlike shrapnel and it is still running now four or five years later. It was a real mess though!

It never did that again so I think it must've been a shift in the Time/Space continuum or someone in NZ fell into the ionosphere when they could no longer hold on upsidedown.

837717 2009-12-09 02:53:00 Good reason to rip CDs at slow speeds. That and you will probably get a more accurate copy anyway Agent_24 (57)

837719 2009-12-09 09:33:00 Great pictures & example of what happens -- Thankfully the bits stayed in the drive when it exploded -- Hate to think what would have happened if some flew out at a persons head level-- (((( Shudder)))) wainuitech (129)
837720 2009-12-10 12:56:00 Had the same thing happen to me about 3 months ago. Burning data to a blank cd on the Asus 1814BL DL RW optic drive in computer. I'm sure I saw flames leaping out of the box!! When the wine was finished ( which was much later than the whine and groans from the drive) and I went to open the drive drawer and it wouldn't so I removed the drive from the computer and opened the case, seeing much like what you show in your pics. Cleaned it out, and it worked.....until it started to cycle the tray in and out, sometimes work, sometimes not. Uninstal/reinstal, it may work. Leave it alone for few hours, it works.
Close inspection of the insides and I saw that the 25mm wide strip connector, that comes from the laser lens and is connected to the PCB, had three tiny nicks in it along an outside edge and what looked like a crease in it. As this connector straightens and folds as the optic drive's tray open and closes I assumed that it was causing the intermittent behavior.
Didn't bother seeking out a replacement cable or putting it in for repair....figured that @ $NZ60.00 two year ago and not much more today for a new one, I'd buy new. Still haven't bought it, using the LG DVD RW instead.
What caused the disc to disintegrate? There was a hairline crack in it that ran from the center hole across the hub to the disc proper. I saw it there days before and thought 'that looks like a crack'. It was, I know now not to use them.
WarNox, I hope your drive survived.
