726336 2008-12-06 23:49:00 Im at my friend place who needs her lawn cut.The lawn is about 1m tall. She just moved in to the new house

She called up yesterday for a man to come over to take a look and mow the lawn

The guy came over quoted it at $200 and he said asked me for money.I said arent you gonna cut it first? He said to trust him.I felt a bit awkward so asked him to write up a receipt. It was on a A4 piece of paper that says

The Name of the person
Cellphone number
Then it says received $200

Take Rubbish and Cut lawn area
Dump Rubbish

Signed <name>

I asked him if 10:30am or 11am be ok?He said yes and I am still waiting for him to come.

I gave him a call and there was no answer and sent him a text message

Now I have been waiting him since this morning.

If the made up receipt is made up by him and signed for.I suppose he can't do anything funny right?

726337 2008-12-06 23:55:00 Bye bye $200!!!

Was he driving a sign-written vehicle? Or just a beat-up old van?

726338 2008-12-06 23:57:00 Thats the easist 200 buckeroonis he has ever made.
Rule one get the service first if its ok pay.
Its the same at the pub you get your drink and then pay for it.
We do outside work in our bus garage but the bus dosent leave the yard until its paid for.
Once an idiot stopped the cheque thought he was a smart bugger. Until we went around on a Sunday chopped the lock off the gate towed the bus back to our yard and took the starter off it.
After paying in cash he got his bus back and the starter which he had to fit himself.
It ok to get purchaser to pay for materials

726339 2008-12-07 00:01:00 It sounds like your money and the Guy may have gone - and never to be seen again - having a signed piece of paper, esp for that amount may be worthless.

Yes he's signed it to say he will do the job, but trying to get your money back, even with a Signed document may cost you more in legal costs than its worth.

What you should have done is gotten him to do the job, and by all means make part payment at the end of the day for the work done so far - but to pay up front fully, with " trust Me" - Not a good Idea.

He may be laughing - more or less saying- OK got your money, now what you gonna do about it if I dont turn up --- That is of course unless he had some sort of accident and couldn't answer you - that would be different.

726340 2008-12-07 01:11:00 Just a thought - If you paid him by cheque, on Monday call up your bank and cancel it - then it cant be cashed. wainuitech (129)

726343 2008-12-07 03:05:00 I'd say you were VERY lucky - in future dont pay until the job is done wainuitech (129)

If he was GST registered, sure. Anyone can write a fake receipt. Heck, I can make you pay for a video card and send you a receipt written by my little brother.
