2009-12-08 21:36:00 | Hi, I should mention that I have already searched Google, and I could not find a solution. And my self-built PC had been running WinXP perfectly for the past three years - until yesterday. And that I had installed windows operating systems successfully a number of times before. But I have never come across the following problem: Why I needed a clean install: My windows XP won't start. I shutted down the computer yesterday, today when I turn the computer on i get: *Start in safe mode *start in safe mode with networking *start in safe mode with command prompt *use last known good configuration settings *start windows normally When I try to start windows normally it gets to the windows xp logo screen with the status bar that moves around and "loads" but then there is a blue screen that looks like some hardware malfunction error; the same for boot using last known good configuration settings. Not sure what has caused this. So I decided to perform a clean installation of the Windows XP system. Insert CD, the program checks hardware drivers, then format the disk into NTFS system, and copies the files over to the disk. The problem is , after self reboot, it goes back to checking the hardware - format disk - copy files cycle again! The actual installation never happened. I've tried both the professional and home XP CDs (both genuine), but I was unable to get the installation started. Please help me Daniel

2009-12-08 22:23:00 | I did a CHKDSK, it reported back that "there is one or more disk errors". I would have thought that formatting of the disk would have solved the problem. This hardrive used to have three parititions, C, D and E. But the installation process only detected the C drive. Does this mean my Seatgate SATA II 320GB harddrive has come to the end of its life? And I need to buy a new one? Cheers Daniel

2009-12-08 23:09:00 | Are you booting from the CD every time when you install windows? You should only boot from it once (the first time) The second time, it should boot from the hard drive and continue installation.

2009-12-09 00:05:00 | The harddrive is just under 3 years, I wonder if it is still under Warranty? Not sure if I still got the original receipt though. Will I lose all my data on the drive :( I've already tried to boot without the CD the second time, it came up with some "link fail" message, and hangs there forever...

2009-12-09 00:10:00 | Hard drives can and do fail at any age, last year I had 3 new hard Drives on my own office PC all fail within the year. Depending on the make of the hard drive, will depend on the warranty, Seagates for example have different time periods. Some PC shops only put on a one year warranty, when in fact the time is 3-5 years. IF a drive went in under warranty, unless you asked to have the data saved (normally at a cost) the drive would only be replaced - all data gone. That's one reason to back up everything you cant afford to lose on a regular basis.

2009-12-09 00:12:00 | Just checked supercheapPC's website (where I bought the disk from): ALL HARDDRIVES ARE SOLD WITH 12 MONTHS RTB WARRANTY. Guess I am out of luck here.

But the manufacturer usually provides a longer warranty . . . Go to Seagate website and do a warranty check and enter your serial number . They will tell you if you still have a warranty or not (if you're lucky you'll have one of the 5 year ones) What is this "Link fail" message? can you tell us exactly what it says? (photo would be even better) |
