729028 2008-12-14 20:35:00 Peter asked his mate John to buy a pizza for him. He gave his mate $30 for the pizza. John went to the pizza shop and ordered the pizza and handed $30 to the shop owner. The pizza shop owner gave back John $5 change and told John that the pizza's on Special today for only $25.

On his way back, John decided to keep $2 for his 'service'. He handed the pizza and $3 change to Peter and told him that the pizza's on Special today for only $27.

Now, let's do our cash-flow calculation:

Peter actually paid 30 - 3 =$27 for his pizza

John kept $2 for his 'service'

Therefore, 27 + 2 = $29

But, Peter handed to John $30.

Where has the $1 gone????

729029 2008-12-14 20:42:00 He pocketed that too. wratterus (105)
729030 2008-12-14 20:44:00 John took it :D

There is an error in the second paragraph. Peter paid $27, which included John's "service" charge. 27+2 is incorrect.

729031 2008-12-14 21:07:00 Where has the $1 gone????

Peter actually paid $25 for the pizza, received $3 change and his so called mate stole $2.00 =$30

$25 +$3 = $28 + the 2 bucks he's down to his thieving friend = $30. It is called shrinkage if you are an accountant, or creative accounting if you are a Finance Company owner.

You can't add or subtract the same money twice, or move it to the wrong side of the equation.

Facts:

1. Peter paid (30-3)$27 for his pizza.
2. John got $2 for his 'service'.
3. $1 has evaporated. Gone to the IRD? :D
4. If, John did NOT pocket the $2 for his 'service' the sum added up nicely
(30-5 = $25).

729033 2008-12-14 22:04:00 The $1 was used for Metla's EXTRA CHEESE  CYaBro (73)
729034 2008-12-14 22:58:00 You shouldn't have said "$27 plus $2 = $29", you should have said "$27 minus $2 = $25".
At the end of the day, Peter paid out $25 to the pizza man and $2 to his scummy mate and got $3 back.
25+2+3=30

Yeah I don't get ' where has the $1 gone' as it all adds up correectly, and there is no $1 missing.

729036 2008-12-14 23:37:00 If you read the second paragraph carefully, you'll see what he meant. ;) pcuser42 (130)
729037 2008-12-15 00:09:00 pcuser has it right. If you break down the statement 27 + 2 = 29 What is actually being proposed is :-

27(the price paid to the pizza shop + the two dollars stolen) + 2(the two dollars stolen) = 29

The 2 dollars stolen have obviously been used twice in the same equation
