728646 2008-12-13 12:22:00 Today for some reason I decided to view windows updates and install them. After installing them I had to restart. After restarting, at the loggin page, a message came out saying"YOU MAY BE A VICTIM OF COUNTERFEITING". When i logged in, my desctop background became plain black. At the bottom right corner there is a message which does not go away saying the same as on the loggin. However, this cannot be true, as my windows xp is original. Can anyone please help me how to get rid of this.

Many thanks in advance.

728648 2008-12-13 18:11:00 Just sent you an email, since I cant PM u..

Thought I better not reply in here with what I sent. It maybe against the rules.

Even tho the program is freely available on the internet

Dont leave automatic updates on auto. Change it to notify me

If you think your version of XP is legit, ring MS and tell them, they need to fix it

728649 2008-12-13 20:54:00 Have you registered it yet?

You get that coming up until you register your computer.

728650 2008-12-13 20:59:00 Err no registration is optional

Activating is compulsory. Unless of course, its pirated

What he's seeing probably came up, when the WGA notification update installed automatically.

728651 2008-12-13 21:21:00 as my windows xp is original As mentioned above - if you do have a legit XP product Key then there is no problems - Sometimes spyware will cause windows to come up with this message.

You may need to run malwarebytes / Spyware terminator / Spybot S&D to remove the infections - as well as a good AV, like Nod32 or Avast

What you need to have is the actual product key - The CD may be a genuine XP but if the license isn't then thats a problem. If the PC is a name brand - then there will be a COA on it - if the PC is a built up one from someplace, you should have the CD and product key when you purchased it. IF the person / Shop sold you a PC with out the CD & product key it may be a pirated one - seen that happen MANY times from " Cowboys".

If you call MS to sort it - you may be asked for the actual product key which will look like One of these here (www.microsoft.com) - there is software freely available to find out the product key thats on the PC - but thats no point - what Microsoft will ask is the actual product key from the COA - they will check it - if its legit

They will tell you how to fix that problem - If the key that is quoted to MS comes back as :groan: BUT you insist that you have the COA - then they will ask you to look at the COA - and there are two other small code numbers that they will ask for - Once these are cross referenced , as long as the COA is genuine MS will give you a new 42 digit set of numbers to enter.

728652 2008-12-14 04:07:00 I had a motherboard go kaput and had to replace it . That’s where the problem started .

As I had my Original XP disk I got onto Microsoft and what do I get?

Oh I’m sorry Sir, Your Windows Disk is married to your old Motherboard and you will have to buy a new disk!

Like bleedin ell . Anyway, having given Microsoft their pedigree I went right about removing Windows Genuine Disadvantage and turning off all updates . So far the new motherboard and old OS are playing no problem . :D

What a rort expecting you to buy a new OS every time you have a Hardware problem .
