I want to do a backup but don't want all the microsoft update files or system restore or install programs etc to be part of the archive what directory's etc are safe to delete?? I see a lot of directories in the windows starting with $

838953 2009-12-12 10:14:00 If you dont want any of the updates / installed programs, you'll have to uninstall all of them first. You cant delete folders (without uninstalling the programs first), or else nothing will work, when you use the backup. The $ folders are probably the uninstall folders, for the windows updates. You can probably delete the folder/s, but if you want to uninstall the updates after, you cant. And you'll have to reinstall all of them after you use the backup Speedy Gonzales (78)

That sounds to me like you only want to backup data(documents, videos, etc)

Run CCleaner. Much safer than you manually deleting them.
