838660 2009-12-11 00:53:00 Hi, I'm using the Thomson Gateway TG585v7 and when I do a connectivity check I can only connect to the gateway and not dns servers (202.27.158.40) and (202.27.156.72). Is this bad? Should I change the dns server manually?

838661 2009-12-11 01:14:00 It's OK, they seem to be having issues currently, they're not responding to pings for me either. Try OpenDNS:

I used to use OpenDNS, but about 10 days ago I found my page loads were VERY slow. Switched to the XTRA addresses and all came right. No idea what that was all about.

What will this do in terms of internet performance? If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

838665 2009-12-11 21:54:00 Basically you *need* DNS to browse the 'net, unless you wanna remember that 210.48.100.45 is pcworld.co.nz etc etc

It could just be that they've firewalled them so they don't respond to ping requests? I dunno... If you're browsing, then don't sweat it :)

838666 2009-12-11 22:25:00 Cool, it just seems weird though that the Telecom modem wouldn't ping their own DNS :s narutophantom (12610)
838667 2009-12-12 03:22:00 Doesn't seem strange to me. A huge number of servers disallow pings. Anyway, why does it matter?? linw (53)
838668 2009-12-12 06:27:00 I was just concerned (red x's do not bode well), that's all. narutophantom (12610)
