838631 2009-12-10 23:59:00 After installing Vista SP2 all search functions in my administrator account fail but still work in my guest account anyone know how I can correct this without reformatting the disc as Microsoft tell me to do. Seems like using a sledge hammer to put in a tack. Thanks Roger Hunt (13648)
838632 2009-12-11 00:02:00 Try some of the suggestions here (social.answers.microsoft.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
838633 2009-12-11 02:57:00 Thanks Speedy I have already been to this page and none of the above worked. It works in my guest account can I make another account with admin. privileges and transfer my files to that and would it keep my personal settings. I use Vista in classic mode. Roger Hunt (13648)
838634 2009-12-11 19:35:00 Sounds very frustrating. May I ask what you use the search function for? If it is just to find files, I recommend you forget the Vista search and use something like 'Everything' (download.cnet.com) which instantly finds files for you and has a low loading on your system.

If you want to try another account, just create one and try it. No need to copy your files till you have tested it.

838635 2009-12-11 20:29:00 Linw I use my search for very little really as my file system is well ordered, I just find it quicker to start typing and just click when it pops up.New account worked with the search but all my personal settings didn't transfer over so now I have to change the properties in either my pictures or movies as I want to know how long the movies are but I don't need the length of my pictures but I would like the dimensions of those and Microsoft think they are the same and group them together.I will look at your link and see if it is what I need Ta. 838636 2009-12-12 22:48:00 New account worked with the search but all my personal settings didn't transfer over so now I have to change the properties in either my pictures or movies as I want to know how long the movies are but

Right click My Computer>Properties>On the left pane select "Advanced system settings">Under User profiles select Settings>Then, select the old user account and click "Copy to">Choose the new account folder(Located in C:\users)

You will also need to change the access permissions to "Everyone" in the same window.

You must do all above from an admininistrative user account different to the ones you are copying to and from. (Make a temp account, or just use the hidden Administrator account)

838637 2009-12-13 12:06:00 Thanks Blam Do I need to show hidden files first and where do I find the hidden Admin. Account? Roger Hunt (13648)
838638 2009-12-14 00:47:00 To enable the hidden admin account type this in an elevated command prompt(run cmd as admin)

net user Administrator /active:yes

Then hit enter. At the logon screen, you will now see the "Administrator" account.

There is no need to show hidden files and folders, as the Users folder is not hidden.

838639 2009-12-14 06:59:00 OK Tried that Blam, Anyone have a Vista Home Premium.ISO I could Please beg, borrow,or steal as I now have to reformat and start again as it is now a real mess I had to run a new firefox program just to post this as all my bookmarks, settings,add-ons etc are lost in here somewhere. I created a new account and the search worked then I went to the cmd prompt and started the admin account. I transfered my files from the old account to the new and rechecked the search and it didn't work and a lot of my files were gone. System restore didn't help Roger Hunt (13648)
838640 2009-12-14 07:48:00 Just found my e-mail is also now stuffed along with over half the installed programs on my computer click on them and nothing happens. The e-mail has reverted to how is was when I first downloaded it. That was what happened with Firefox all my Bookmarks gone, add-ons gone. Backup also gone. Roger Hunt (13648)
