838387 2009-12-10 08:08:00 I am putting together a computer (like this (www.atech.co.nz)) for one of my relatives with 2gb of ram and have been talked into getting W7 Home Prem 64bit (cheaper than 32bit for a start), what sort of issues am I likely to have with hardware (Brother HL2040 laser printer should be ok, 64bit driver is available; D-Link 302G should be fine) and the usual programs (Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Incredimail (yeah I know), Java (used in EA/Pogo game site especially), Adobe Reader/Flash/Shockwave, Wordviewer/Powerpoint Viewer, 32bit games (non 3D) and utility programs etc ; or am I better to stick with 32bit and save myself the aggravation? feersumendjinn (64)
838388 2009-12-10 08:15:00 If whatever has 64 bit drivers, there shouldnt be any probs. Routers should be OK they dont need drivers (unless maybe its USB). Flash (there's no 64 bit version, you'll have to run a 32 bit browser, if you want to use flash). All the other programs should work fine. I'm using Office 07, CDburnerXP, Poweriso, ccleaner, Foxit, Malwarebytes, Itunes, Skype, Teamviewer, Disk Defrag, Glary Utils, WinDVD, Paint Shop Pro x2, MS LIfe, Mirc, in x64. And these are all 32 bit. The only thing that didnt work properly on this, is this tuner (the AverTV program) was flaky in Win7 x64. BUT, Media centre is fine. And the printer didnt really work either (even with Vista x64 drivers). Trojan remover doesnt work in x64 (but that'll change next year,) Speedy Gonzales (78)

838391 2009-12-10 09:31:00 dont use x64 unless you have 4Gb of RAM, it runs better with more RAM SolMiester (139)

838393 2009-12-10 17:44:00 I'm running it perfectly well on 2 Gb RAM and a dual core processor gary67 (56)
838394 2009-12-10 18:18:00 There shouldn't be any problems. Flash does have 64 bit driver now.
I have been using 64 bit since first beta release and can honestly say I have had no real problems of any sort.
My printer wouldn't work initialy. Vista 64 bit incompatible. But as soon as they became available 7 found and installed them. In fact I have never had to search for drivers, 7 does the searching and installation.
My A/V is Nod 32 and I had to download and install the 64 bit version.
A couple of programs I used would not intall and I got message telling me why.
Windows 7 is the easiest O/S to load. It gives no problems.
Just make sure you remove everything off your hard drive before you start. I prefer a clean install.

Cheaper? All my suppliers sell the 64bit and 32bit versions for the same price.

There shouldn't be any issues unless you have some really old peripheral or any 16bit applications.
32bit are fine.

838396 2009-12-10 19:00:00 Flash does have 64 bit driver now.
Unfortunately that's only Linux:
kb2.adobe.com

There's nothing wrong with using a 32-bit browser (Chrome / IE / Firefox / Safari) in 64-bit windows. See attachment.
