Thats about on a par with saying washing machines make you lazy.

Bit of dubious logic there,I would say.

727632 2008-12-11 05:32:00 Not really - lazy in the sense that if you have a person who has never driven a manual, only autos, then they have to drive a manual watch the kangaroo jumps down the road, cant drive the car properly - but the other way round not a problem. wainuitech (129)
727633 2008-12-11 05:41:00 Questions.
I read that up hill and down hill one can use the low gear. Sweet.

One should also put the car into N gear at traffic lights right?

Next, in a city flat roads, should I use D? Cos if I use N and low gears even if I am only going at 50 or under, that's higher revs and not good for the car right ...

Look...I spent 47 years in the auto-repair trades, many of them in transmissions. I like pretty much everybody here and wish no-one any harm and I may certainly come on a little strong here about things that I know to be wrong in my field of knowledge.

My purpose here is to try to educate, not spank anyone for misinformation or antiquated ideas. Times gone by are not legerdemain at this time and if we don't make progress in our thinking, let alone our usage of things mechanical or even electronic, then we are indeed a strange breed.

Use the transmission the way it was intended.

Stay in gear at lights for safety reasons. It reduces the cyclical "in-gear-and-then-out-of-gear" wear and tear on the LOW/REVERSE and FORWARD clutch packs. Once worn out from too many cycles, then you rebuild the unit.
Never coast in NEUTRAL on any highway..safety reasons again. It should also be against the law in a civilized country too.

Use the lower gear for retarding the vehicle's speed going downhill. If you must keep the transmission from "shuttle-shifting" when going uphill where it cannot decide on the correct gear, then by all means drop it a gear, but use the "passing gear" options, which doesn't really exist either.

Let me explain: "Passing gear is just the next lower gear from where you currently are. It may drop two gears on some transmissions, but there is no "passing gear" per se.

To get to the next lower gear and allow the engine to rev a little and have more power for the climb, just press the pedal down until the transmission selects the next lower gear and THEN pull the selector into that gear.
The reference to using the same gear going up and down is not quite right either.

You must listen to the engine and know when it is laboring and the transmission is holding it it back. So you are in charge.

727635 2008-12-11 06:07:00 In my experience with both manual and automatic, most of SJ's last post is absolute Yank bulldust. But what would I know, I only use the damned things. My experience is obviously not as authentic as SJ's because he uses CAPITAL letters and I don't shout to get my point across.

SJ - total bollocks.

Oh damn, in the space of me replying he came up with another tome. I meant the one before the one before this post.

Stick to your guns, dude. You can't make me angry slapping my face with money.

727637 2008-12-11 06:13:00 I only drive a manual for the following reasons

1 . No probs with towing ie the stupid auto gearbox isnt constantly changing stages and need a trans cooler for heavy towing .

THIS PROVES THAT YOU DIDN'T READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION .

2 . Manual has engine braking

. . AND SO DOES THE AUTO

3 . Autos use more fuel than manuals

NO . . . . . THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE FALLACY AND ANECDOTAL AT BEST AS IT PERTAINS TO 1936 HUDSON HORNETS AND OTHER VINTAGE VEHICLES

4 . Extra cost for servicing ATF is blardy expensive ( manual almost nil other than checking oil level every few years) . Manual OEP oil 90 grade will last the lifetime of the car without changing . Although a change at the first 10 000 k will get the metal bits out from run in .

NEW MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS DON'T EVEN USE 90WT, SO I KNOW YOUR INFO IS ANTIQUATED: THEY USE 5WT OR 10WT OR MULTI-GRADE ENGINE OILS NOW, NOT HEAVY DUTY GREASE . NO METAL IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF CONTAMINATION, NOT SOME "RUN-IN" CHIPS, . . . . . WHICH DON'T EXIST .

5 . And the biggy, autos cost an arm and a leg to fix and boy they all need fixing sooner than later at relatively low kilometres and chrono time as the seals go . Quite often repair cost is a lot more than car is worth .
Manuals on the other hand now days are bullet proof probaly get a few million ks out of japper one .

HEAVY DUTY LINE TRUCKS WITH OVER 2 MILLION REAL MILES, NOT KILOMETERS ON THEM, ARE USING ALLISON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ALL OVER THE US AS THE MOST EFFICIENT AND MOST AFFORDABLE UNITS TO BUY AND MAINTAIN .

IF THEY DID COST MORE (AND THEY DON'T) THE TRUCK FLEETS WOULD NOT USE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE .

THE ADDED BONUS TO THE FLEET OWNERS IS THAT THERE ISN'T A LOOSE CANON DRIVING AND GEAR-JAMMING THE 13-SPEED TO DEATH AND FRYING THE CLUTCH .

HAULING 80,000 LBS OF FREIGHT AT FREEWAY SPEEDS, OVER DESERTS AND SNOWED IN MOUNTAINS IS A REAL TEST OF THE AUTOMATICS TOO . THEY RUN COOLER, WASTE LESS FUEL AND COST LESS TO THE BEAN COUNTERS IN THE LONG HAUL .

IF THERE WAS FUEL WASTE FROM A/T INEFFICIENCY AS YOU STATE, THE MONEY PEOPLE WOULD INSIST ON MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN A NEW YORK MINUTE .

6 . The joy of being able to double the clutch, drop down a few gears and boot it .

SO . . . YOU HAVE TO DOUBLE-CLUTCH A FULLY-SYNCHRO'D MANUAL TRANSMISSION? THAT MEANS 1) YOU DESTROYED THE SYNCHRO-SLIDERS BY BAD SHIFTING TECHNIQUES 2) YOU DON'T REALIZE THAT THEY HAVE GOTTEN AWAY FROM "ROCK-CRUSHER" TRANSMISSIONS WITH NO SYNCHROS, BUT THAT WAS IN THE LATE 1940S I BELIEVE AND YOU MAY NOT BE UP TO SPEED .

Christ remind me NEVER to bullet point or number a list of things .
Every time a coconut someone will line by line rubbish everything you have written .

I got both and the wife has the auto .

Makes her happy .

What makes momma happy also makes me happy .
