727750 2008-12-22 23:41:00 I donnow cic...the 1800 lb "Never-Never Corvette" ate everything up - so bad that Chevrolet took it off the market and forbade any more to be built. About 30 or so got off the assy line and Zora Duntov grabbed them all up and priveteered them to great dismay of things UK, French, Italian, German and others.

Over 1G cornering, 500+ horses and suspension that gobbled road surfaces like popcorn (NZ= crumpets at a truck stop, er - LORRY stop I mean!) was NOT a bad combo. I think this mystery 'Vette was never touched pound-for-pound or horse-for-horse or G-for-G in all subsequent auto racing history.

One of my fav Brit irons was the Cooper Climax and the Morgan (for design, not the wooden frame) and I loved my 1959 Hillman Husky! AC Bristols (with a Chevy engine and transmission) were kingly in my opinion as were the original non-plastic Shelbys from England.

After Carrol S. wooz'd-out and destructo'd the only macho car that Ford made by stapling the trim (Yup! STAPLES TO INSTALL THE PLASTICIZED CHROME-PLATED BADGES AND GINGERBREAD ONTO THE BODY AND HOOD!:waughh:) onto a Mustang and calling it a Shelby Cobra, I lost all faith and never marveled at his prowess or abilities as a real mechanic. He became a marketeer for dollars. Bad Carrol! Bad!

Austin Americas were a joke along the lines of the Citroen and some Saabs.

One interesting hybrid Amerikan-Brit-Irish car was the DeLorean. It was the safest car on the road as it could NOT run OFF the road. Why? It was always sniffing the white line!!! Nyuck, nyuck!

I really dug on the Swedish 1969 Saab 96, with that odd-ball reverse rotation V4 Taunus engine with a countershaft as big as the crank and as heavy too, and the four speed in the column shifter! Talk about monkey motion! Worse, if this can be believed, than Benz diesel throttle linkage! Really!

Incredible! :illogical

All-in-all I have never appreciated M-Bs and BMWs for any reasons whatsoever. Pure over-hyped junk!

Porsche was kinda cute in an emasculating way and they really went Nancy-boy with that Water-Boxster engine.

I DID like the 1959 Porky Bathtub Speedster though; but it makes me want to suckle something. Let's put a Vortec Chevy 350 in it and a THM700R4 transmission!

727751 2008-12-22 23:54:00 No good talking to you Joey if you believe vettes etc are in the same street as Lotus super 7's and the like, when it comes to cornering.
Do they have hill climbs in USA,?I know you are good at drag racing, but cornering isn't in your vocab.

If you want a good car over there ,try the Lexus.

727753 2008-12-23 00:12:00 Because of the sheer size of the country, corners in America tend to be extremely large radius (from our POV). The minimum distance travelled for an effective 90 degree change in direction is approximately 3 miles. This is why they can have the long-wheelbase Hummers and Caddys that usually have their front wheels in a different state (or at minimum, a different county) than the rear wheels. Therefore cornering is not an issue.

Cars in smaller countries (like "Upsidedown Land") have to be able to turn very quickly, or end up in the sea.

This is why cars built in the UK or Japan can take a corner at faster speeds than American cars.

I suspect you lean toward Yank tanks Met,I have always fancied a Cobra,I am always taken when I see reproduction model around town.
The fact is if those Vettes were to compete with cars from Europe, they would be left for dead, assuming there were corners in the course.

727755 2008-12-23 01:06:00 Personally I cant' stand 99% of american cars. Big gas guzzling tanks that don't like corners. Which is fine in america, but not anywhere else except africa, and they cant afford them. they all drive '89 mercs. :D

The new caddys and the Viper aren't too bad as far as having a nice car to drive in a country like NZ, but apart from that... :(

The new Ford GT is very nice, but its not american. Lotus did the suspension, and various other european manufacturers did the rest of it, only bit thats properly american is the engine. Good engine though, I believe it came out of the top spec F150 pickup?

As far as I can tell, any good (in an average NZers opinion) american car built since 1985 is mostly not american.

Lok what america did to the nissans. 350z roadster for instance - great car, all the good things about it ruined and it was made into a slushy mess. And gosh its ugly.

Only at car shows.

Wouldn't buy one, Personally I lean towards the Aussie cars.

Never yet found a corner I couldn't get around on NZ roads faster then the recommended speed....No matter what oversize pile of junk I was wrestling.

Grit your teeth and hold your line.

Having said that, Imo any more then 5 grand on a car is just a waste of money.

727757 2008-12-23 01:21:00 For the record, I'd expect a modern doing all the management including gear changing to be able to be more efficient then my big feet and manual gearbox.

Depending on the type country I'm travelling i tend to hold her close to the red line, 3rd gear in my work wagon for example cuts off at 140KM/h, so shes sweet for aggressive driving and starting passing manuvers. Just click her into forth to sail past the 100mph point.....

I am with you Wratterus yank cars look alright but they are s!@#$ at going around corners.
NZ being a mountainous land their cars here are for show only

727759 2008-12-23 21:19:00 Met a Yank couple in a B&B in Edinburgh (that is in Scotland, SJ) who had just returned their rental car early because of sheer terror from (not) dealing with the roundabouts in Britain.

Maybe that was because they weren't used to going around corners in America cos the cars there won't let them do it?
