728353 2008-12-12 10:06:00 Hiya...

Just wanted to "find" a strawberry farm to bring my kids to, my daughter's having her birthday next weekend, and I thought this would be quite a good family activity!

Can't find a single "strawberry farm"" that allows picking though, after searching the whole afternoon online!

Anyone know of any around Auckland? I'm guessing there are some out west, but just wanted to make sure that they are open, so names / phone numbers will be great???

Thanks!!!

728354 2008-12-12 10:09:00 Big strawberry farm and shop on State Highway 16 Whenuapai about 900 metres from Westgate shopping centre on the right heading to Kumeu Huapai Helensville etc.
Also big strawberry farms on Riverhead Coatsville highway about half way along on the left heading to Albany highway.

We went there twice a couple of years ago to pick some nice strawberries at a great rate per kilo. No idea if they still do it, though, and if they do, how much they charge. You can find the directions on google maps.

Oh, and there is a MASSIVE strawberry farm, probably the exact same one prefect refers to, and it's owned by the Garelja brothers. The rules are: you are not allowed to eat the fruits, and you have to work. For 50c a kilo.

728358 2008-12-12 20:16:00 Luckily NZ doesnt have a nazi OSH system like Pomgolia. Its a bit more common sense. All you have to do is display a sign stating the danger if the clowns ignore it its at their peril. prefect (6291)

ah, then you have zero understanding of OSH regulations.

If someone is on your commercial property and gets hurt then your at fault for failing to do everything in your power to keep em safe.

No exceptions, well, at least not on paper.

You can get prosecuted if someone climbs a fence and falls in a hole....

728361 2008-12-19 21:35:00 Just wanted to correct something, Garelja Bros do not have pick your own, haven't for years (if ever), you're getting mixed up with the place next door.

Growers only start pick your own when the strawberry plants are not producing economic volumes for wholesale trade.

While there are OSH issues about having the public wandering around a commercial operation, allowing the public in also means the plants will get wrecked pretty quickly because of the way people pick if they haven't been trained.

PYO will start after Christmas and you'll see more farms with signs outside them as the plants go past their peak (which is mid to late December)

728362 2008-12-20 01:36:00 Yeah -Whenuapai. They don't advertise until the main crop has been harvested.
Then you get to go pick your own/
I'm already picking my own strawberries and raspberries.
Yum..............
