838379 2009-12-10 06:33:00 Hi,
I thought I had posted this at lunchtime- but cannot see it--so apologies if I duplicate

I am running XP Pro and a second dual boot h/d running windows 7

I installed MSS after F1 enthused over it,on w 7---but still retain ESET on my XP h/d

When my RC w7 expires in May next year I am tempted to use MSS in a legal install of W7 on the two h/d combined--hopefully :Ultimate", though I wonder at the need to spend $500 odd unless it is sharply better than W7 Home Premium--- but either way at the expense of ESET, which is a highly satifactory AV,

Would this be as safe as ESET if on the new install to come of W7 --to use MSS solely at the expence and savings of ESET

838380 2009-12-10 06:37:00 So are you asking if MSE by itself will be alright?? If you are then yup, its safe by itself. It just wont have a firewall. If the version of NOD32 you've got has the firewall as well Speedy Gonzales (78)
838381 2009-12-10 06:41:00 Hi Speedy,
Yes ESET has it's own firewall and I cannot fault it really

838382 2009-12-10 06:51:00 If you dont mind not having a firewall MSE is fine. Since it doesnt have one

Depends what you want really (as in features - whether you get premium or ultimate). By the looks of it, premium doesnt have / support:

Bitlocker / Applocker / Joining a domain / remote desktop / encrypting file system / advanced backup / directaccess / branchcache / local aware printing, and MUI language packs. You probably dont know what 1/2 of these do / or use them anyway. I wouldnt bother with any of them. There are other ways / programs that will let you do some of them

838383 2009-12-10 07:13:00 Hi Speedy,

Thank you as usual, a definitive analyses
Though I dont use most of those you state,in W 7 --- I do have access to XP in Ultimate and a few other programs and a lot of my XP programs apparently can be used in W7 with this adaptability
However price may be the biggest concern either way and whether I pay $300 or the $500 OS remains to be seen.
I sure like W7
Superanuitants are somewhat limited for any daydreams that occur to come to profit so to speak
Thanks anyway

838384 2009-12-10 07:29:00 Most programs should work in Windows 7. Its 64 bit (if you get this version), you have to worry about. You have to make sure whatever you have / use has 64 bit drivers. Since 32 bit drivers wont install / work Speedy Gonzales (78)
838385 2009-12-10 17:23:00 If Win7 is working for you already, then that's great. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using the built-in Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

Granted eset is always at the top of it's class, but a very close second would be MSE :)

No way. Take a look at Wainuitechs test he posted a while back. It's better than the other free ones but nowhere near as good as NOD.

If price is an issue PM me.
