730267 2008-12-17 21:56:00 I have planted broccoli for the first time this year and they seem to be doing quite well.

I have always been told to wrap the leaves around the heads of cauliflower and wondered if that needs to be done with broccoli as well.

Some of the stalks that the heads are on are quite long whereas others are compact as you would expect - they look the same as what you would buy.

I'm certain that there are many experienced gardeners out there who have grown broccoli before. Your help would be appreciated.
:thanks

Just give it plenty of compost and manure, a good soak with water now and then and wait.

730271 2008-12-18 00:17:00 Whenever I grow caulis, I always break some of the leaves and fold them over the head (leaving them semi-attached still), once the head is starting to form, making a natural umbrella . The sun in Auckland turns the cauliflower head a creamy-yellow (more of a problem in the summer than the winter) - I prefer mine sparkling white - even though it doesn't seem to affect the taste . Fresh, home-grown veges FTW!!

Never done that to broccoli though - doesn't seem to discolour . . .

There's a smart bastard in every crowd, eh?:D

After my hard day in the garden I sing the old favourites, "I'm beet, lettuce rest," and "Keep your eyes peeled for the potatoes.";)
