729624 2008-12-16 05:02:00 I recently found this (www.makeuseof.com) website on the web, which had instructions on how to speed up FF loading times.

Its different to any other methods and works effectively.

If FF is really slow to start up on your machine then it might help

Cheers

729625 2008-12-16 05:46:00 This doesn't actually work. The following comments from that page describe it perfectly, so I'll leave it to them:

Without wanting to sound rude your so way off the mark with this it’s untrue!

Compressing the file of course INCREASES load time because the compressed exe has to be uncompressed(albeit automatically) before execution.

The only benefit to this for end users is reduced disc footprint which is no biggie for most of us today anyway.

You need to reboot between executions or Windows dll caching will make it load faster.

This is what happens when you load firefox from an uncompressed state….

Load exe and required resources to memory.

Here’s what happens when you run Firefox UPX packed…

unpack exe and dll
Load exe and required resources to memory.

It’s completely impossible to do two things faster than one, this is not a theory of mine, this is cold hard fact!

729626 2008-12-16 06:14:00 Well I use IE8 Beta2 running under Vista Ultimate Beta SP2.

If firefox needs speeding up then why would I use it?

Tried various versions of FF in the past BTW.

729628 2008-12-16 08:39:00 Don't know about you guys-but I did it on my machine and FF started up 6 seconds faster. Blam (54)
729629 2008-12-16 08:53:00 Maybe a disk defragment would have saved even more? R2x1 (4628)

729632 2008-12-16 20:17:00 If Firefox takes an age to load on your PC, then it's time to invest in a new one or at least upgrade it. On my crappy old work laptop, SeaMonkey (which is bigger than Firefox) only takes a few seconds to load.

These things may help:
- defrag your HDD - use one that prioritises most used files.
- there used to be a preload flag for Firefox which loaded FF up when Windows starts

The other things would be a newer HDD, more RAM.
