840130 2009-12-16 04:09:00 Allright - maybe I'm lazy or is it just that I think you guys are better at this than me ?

Who is currently offering the best deals on lap-tops, she wants Windows 7, no games and later on she wants Office 2010.

Any suggestions gratefully received. :help:

840132 2009-12-16 04:19:00 be aware that W7 does not come with any version of W Office. Nor Outlook Express. We recently bought a Toshiba laptop for Maryann, Wife, for our 7th wedding anniversary. It is great. We are using the Windows Live Mail in place of OE. Personally I dont like it. We also bought a version similar to W Office much cheaper but it is not the same. PJ Poppa John (284)

Well....she could use Office 2010 beta for now(Be prepared for possibly bugs though!) or OpenOffice/StarOffice and upgrade to 2010 later.

What price range is she looking at? If its just typical stuff(word processing, email, web browsing etc) then any laptop will do fine(try to go for toshiba or Asus)

You can always try thunderbird:)

What was the exact name of the Office software you bought? I have seen some manufacturers sell OpenOffice with a different name and packaging...

Too late now.

No - we haven't bought any Office software yet.

But next year she wants the real MS Office 2010 so she can get used to it for her work. ( same reason she wants Windows 7 )

840137 2009-12-16 06:43:00 I tried thunderbird earlier today. So I could access newsgroups. What a PITA to configure email (IMAP). What should have taken less than 10 secs to configure took 20-30 mins lol. It kept saying the smtp server info was wrong (it doesnt use security). Well yer so it didnt have it. But it still kept saying it. So, I biffed it. And installed Office 07 instead. Doing the same thing in OL (with the same settings), took less than 5 seconds. Speedy Gonzales (78)

840139 2009-12-16 07:56:00 Well . . . . she could use Office 2010 beta for now(Be prepared for possibly bugs though!) or OpenOffice/StarOffice and upgrade to 2010 later .

For convenience, the download link for Office 2010 beta is here:
. office2010beta . microsoft . com/default . aspx" target="_blank">us20 . office2010beta . microsoft . com

I'm running it at work (of course) and at home, no significant issues that I've come across yet . Hardware requirements are almost identical to Office 2007 . Except for Outlook and Groove, you can keep using the previous version you have as well if you choose that option .

The beta version will expire in October 2010 .

cheers
