839099 2009-12-13 04:39:00 I am intending to build a new computer with a core i7 860 CPU. My current thoughts are to purchase the 64 bit version of Windows 7, however, I have some hardware and software that is not compatable with Windows 7. I am aware that a XP compatibility mode module can be downloaded for Windows 7 professional and above, which would seem to be the solution. However, does anyone know if the download for the 64 bit verions of Windows 7 is the 32 bit Windows XP? pgtse (13188)
839100 2009-12-13 04:47:00 From what I have heard, it is the 64-bit Windows XP. pcuser42 (130)
839101 2009-12-13 05:46:00 If you have an unused 32bit XP licence maybe you could try that instead, not sure if it would work but can't see why it wouldn't. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will either confirm it or shoot me down in flames gary67 (56)
839102 2009-12-13 07:56:00 XP Mode is a packaged version of Windows Virtual PC, which only supports 32bit guests as it emulates a 32bit processor.

Therefore, the XP VM will be 32bit.

839103 2009-12-13 08:43:00 Yup it's definitely 32-bit. It's been a great way for me to get some 16-bit apps working in 64-bit Win7! :D Chilling_Silence (9)

Hardware - you're out of luck.

Software - maybe, maybe not. 32bit software isn't a problem. 16bit in theory should work with the Compatibility thing - in practice not one of the 16 bit apps I had would work with it. So much for that...........

You could use vmware convertor, to convert your current pc into a virtual version to use with vmware player, also free to use with windows 7 as not ever version has xp mode....
