730417 2008-12-21 20:28:00 I think we are all aware of the above,the point was,speed doesn't kill,misuse does.

its not that speed doesn't kill, its people can't handle the speed. i know of a few road where they have reduced the speed limit because people just keep crashing.

what people forget about is reaction time. faster you go the further distance you go between seeing something and being able to do something about it.
5km/h may be sweet stuff all speed but that extra inch or so can be the difference between missing or killing that kid that ran out.

730419 2008-12-21 21:36:00 I mostly agree that the people that drive around with no WOF (and reg - but not as important) should be taken off the road. Because chances are, it's them that's gonna crash into your car somewhere and drive off, because they won't car about a big dent in their already smashed up car.

If I need a reg and WOF, so does everyone else.

730420 2008-12-21 23:48:00 The WOF scheme here is a tax gathering thing. Long gone have the days when we bought British cars that were warn out at about 20K miles and needed a 6 month WOF. With todays modern cars it should be 12 months like the rest of the world.. paulw (1826)
730421 2008-12-22 00:26:00 Well it is 12 months for modern cars for first few years that doesnt include nip second hand imports and they should be on weekly wofs. prefect (6291)

i would call going over the speed limit misuse ;)

its basicly that going over the limit is fine untill you crash. a bit like NZ's weight limit for light vechiles/trailers, no real weight limit. if you crash you must be overloaded, therefore your not overloaded untill you crash :xmouth:

IMHO doing someone for under 5km above speed limit is stupid. even with the best drivers your going to exceed it sometime. speedo's are not accurate and even reading them is not accurate. there is so little space between 50 and 55 its hard to tell.
also speedo's are only calibrated to +/-10% with factory tires. change the tires changes what the speed reads. worn tires can read different to new tires.

its just a cheap way for the police to look like they are doing their job.

730423 2008-12-22 08:27:00 A teenage family member yesterday got stung with a $200 fine for an expired WoF just five minutes before she left the house to go get one . The car was sitting outside her property on the street where it always is as the flat has no on-site parking . She cycles to work so hasn't been driving around in the vehicle .

The warrant expired three weeks ago but she hasn't been able to afford to get it renewed, having had to fork out $600 to have a cancerous melanoma removed and $300 dental work recently . Unfortunately she was too proud to ask for a loan and now her Xmas has been thoroughly spoilt, not to mention her hard-earned summer holidays .

Hopefully the explanation letter sent to the council will reach a kind-hearted soul who will provide some lenience otherwise it will be a very painful lesson learnt .

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah .

Excuses are excuses, I'm fairly sure the council isn't stupid enough to fall for **** like this .

Anyone with common sense knows that on a urban street, there are more risks so you must adjust your speed to suit those conditions, Of course
on a motorway there is far less risks, so your speeds can be higher,
but of course speeds need to be adjusted for the conditions.
But we all know that we can crash at any speed, due to inattention, playing
with the radio, talking on cellphone, doing your make up, bad day at work etc.
Unfortunately a lot of people don't have common sense and that is why we need speed limits.
