The AK47 did not exist . Nor did the outside demand for gold, diamonds, cobolt, copper, minerals etc . . Rubbish . There are hundreds of tribes in Sub-Saharan Africa . And they all have differing traits . But a great deal of them made their living from war and pillage . The Zulu and Matabele come to mind . Others were trade based . Ivory, gold, slaves . . etc . This idea of happily little tribes of Africans, peacefully co-exiting and separating their recyclables is trite . And on Zimbabwe, they fought for Mugabe . The people wanted him . They have him . There was a bloody war fought with thousands of civilians killed in order to have the opportunity at having Mugabe . well, how 'bout them apples? Why should the UN do anything? They didn't invade the US when the election was rigged in 2001 . They didn't even go into Iraq . |

So.......you seriously believe that before the modern firearm arrived, whole tribes roamed nomadically across the face of this vast continent robbing everyone else? Where'd they get the slaves from if the other guys were also out raping and pillaging.....? They'd keep missing each other. Of course there was violence. And slavery. And some tribes were more warlike than others. No dispute. What this ignores is that the vast majority of Africans did live relatively peaceably in villages. If this wasn't true, they'd all have died out thousands of years ago - you simply cannot survive on a constant war footing. Its no different to the Maori who were equally violent, the American Indians, the Jutes, Angles, Goths etc of Europe. If you want to ask a real question it is this: why have the African colonies of European powers slipped backwards since independance? Compared to the Asian and South American colonies which have forged ahead.......? |

Read a few history books and you'll see African tribes at war since time began. "The strong one rules". Get slaves from counter-robbing each other. sarel |

Compared to the Asian and South American colonies which have forged ahead . . . . . . . ? I too have wondered why . There is so much about African history that I do not know . Comparing past civilizations, e . g . Mayan and Angkor - were there similar great civilizations in Africa (sub Sahara)? The first humans originated in sub Sahara Africa, so why don't we see great stable, prosperous civilizations like there are in other parts of the world? |
