730186 2008-12-18 03:17:00 This is hopeless, everyones voting for where they live. We must be happy with where we are! :)

Not me. I live in Whangarei and voted for the Bay of Islands :p
But Whangarei has some awesome beaches!

+1 to that.
The Bay of Islands and far north region are one of most favourite places in NZ.

Been there 3 times to visit the lighthouse. First 2 times we were flooded out by a gentle Nth Auckland shower, you know, roads closed by slips and floods. Never went further than Pahia and were trapped there both times.

Third time, we were determined to get there and went on a day trip from Pahia, regardless of impending rain. Mate, it pissed down solid all the way there and all the way back. Walked down to view the lighthouse in a howling gale and torrential downpour. Got as wet as a shag.

As we live in Hawkes Bay (Gods gift to mere people to compensate for the rest of NZ) and the distance is excessive, I doubt that we will try again

Mind you, it might look nice on a fine day.

Hehe, yeah fair enough, that would put a lot of people off, good on you for being persistant though ;)

I've been to the Cape Reinga lighthouse a couple of times (in fine weather), always found it quite amazing being that north in NZ, but the drive to get there is a mission.

My family spent many summers (late December through to early Jan) camping on a private farm/beach just down from Russell. This is probably why I like the area up north so much.

730190 2008-12-18 05:38:00 This isn't really working lol. People are just listing towns, or particular geographic areas, not provinces (or regions, as they're now officially called). For example, Hawke's Bay is a region, Northland is a region, Canterbury is a region. Bay of Islands, Wairarapa, Fiordland are not. I'd edit the first post to clarify, but I can't because it's the first post of the thread, so I'll do it here. The regions of New Zealand, commonly referred to as provinces (though this is a misnomer), are:

-Northland
-Auckland
-Waikato
-Bay of Plenty
-East Cape (usually called Gisborne)
-Taranaki
-Manawatu/Wanganui
-Hawke's Bay
-Wellington

-Nelson
-Tasman
-Marlborough
-West Coast
-Canterbury
-Otago
-Southland

Makes me laugh when Southland people claim Fiordland. Its NOT part of Southland.
They always report tourists loving Southland too - when they have visited Milford, Queenstown etc etc.

What do you mean Fiordland isn't part of Southland? Even your maps show it as Southland. I have never seen it referred to as otherwise.

730195 2008-12-18 11:48:00 I have been instructed to reply as follows:-

All regions are reasonable.
(South Islanders are reasonable, but Middle Islanders (particularly those between Bluff and Picton/Nelson) are terminally unreasonable. North Islanders have to make up for the deficiencies of quite a few lesser beings.

The only part of NZ (And the Universe by inference) worth considering is within 100 metres of here. If SwMBO's shadow doesn't fall on it, forget it.
If her wrath falls on it, I'll definitely remember it.
