730277 2008-12-18 03:30:00 Whenever I grow caulis, I always break some of the leaves and fold them over the head (leaving them semi-attached still), once the head is starting to form, making a natural umbrella. The sun in Auckland turns the cauliflower head a creamy-yellow (more of a problem in the summer than the winter) - I prefer mine sparkling white - even though it doesn't seem to affect the taste. Fresh, home-grown veges FTW!!

Never done that to broccoli though - doesn't seem to discolour...

Thank you, Johcar. I did not remember the reason. I don't mind the colour but SWMBO is very particular. She likes them white.

Makes you wonder how the market gardeners in Auckland keep the heads white? I can't imagine them doing that with all their thousands of caulis.

So far as the broccoli is concerned, some are growing a nice wee head and others are growing a long stalk with the nice green pieces growing out the side. Sound ok?

And a would be comedian as well,it would seem.

Sounds like you have too much nitrogen in the soil :yuck:

Which is possible - but also means a potential multi-harvest...

For the F1 crowd, that is a bit of a change, eh?

Perhaps you'd like to tune up your guitar and accompany me in that well known gardening refrain, "Heart Beet" (singing),

Do you carrot at all for me?
My heart beets for you,
With your turnip nose
And your radish face .
You are a peach .
If we cantaloupe,
Lettuce marry .
Weed make a great pear .

Heart beet, heart beet, etc:D
