729498 2008-12-15 23:05:00 I don't think food (by that I mean no seasonal things such as fruit and vege) has gone up that much in the last year or so. (Cheese and Cereals have)

In fact I think the trend has been for steady prices over the last few years.

What worries me is how they have managed to do that ? How many of our grocery products have Chinese ingredients in them ? which would enable them to keep prices down. Asian toothpaste anyone ?

I am with you on that one Digby. I no longer would trust Chinese export food.
After the malamine addition to milk powder, Ill give the Chinese export food a miss.

729499 2008-12-15 23:10:00 Any beer is better than no beer.

Agreed.

But it depends what you say qualifies as beer, and both Tui and Flame are just yellow fizzy alcoholic water.

Give me a single Emersons over a dozen of either of those any day.

15 pack of Tui was $25

Carlsberg 18 Pack at Pack N Save, cheaper and a better beer by far. Normally around $15

729504 2008-12-15 23:56:00 If we're talking beer, don't you just hate paying a premium price for a premium (apparently imported) beer, only to find out it's made in NZ under licence and doesn't taste anything like the real thing?!!!

First thing I do these days is check where it's made. If it's not a traditional kiwi beer (that is, it's an import knock-off made by NZ Breweries or DB), I stop buying it.

I don't drink Stella or Heineken any more - and there's a few other going the same way that I'll be sad not to drink in NZ again too.

729505 2008-12-16 00:02:00 I just went into Countdown in Napier (the new one, we have two countdowns that are a 2 min walk from each other)

One loaf of Quality Bakers (we're stuck on the brand) was $4.20

15 pack of Tui was $25

A packet of Chocolate Fingers was $4.30

So? There is Budget bread, New World sells it for $1.29.
As for biscuits - you don't need them.
You should learn to shop and cook in a way that suits your budget. Its not hard at all.

729506 2008-12-16 00:04:00 Beh. Can't really drink beer anyway ever since a bad experience with too much at one time. Well, there was one kind of beer that I liked. A German exchange student brought some fruity beer - tasted sort of like banana-ish gum-ish. I have no idea what it's called or if NZ sells any. And no, it wasn't banana/ginger beer. It actually had alcohol in it. :p qazwsxokmijn (102)

Stella is a bargain basement beer in Europe. So are most of the luxury imported beers that we drink.

I got a six pack of Leffe Blonde in Paris for 4 Euro. Here a four pack costs about $15. Also, Paris prices are inflated...
