839074 2009-12-14 02:28:00 @Blam my current phone is a motorola c200? - worst phone ever made can't even handle leap years, i am even jealous of my wifes elderly nokia 3315

I am looking for a phone that can access the internet using my router at home while i am at home as i seem to spend an inordinate amount of time at home waiting for people to get back to me via e-mail, and i end up having the computer going all day, and not getting much done around the house, as every time i check for an email i surf the net and well half the days gone, yes i have no will power.

I have no interest in being able to access the Net while i am out, I just want to know when something arrives while i am home, and if it can be done cheaply by phone then thats a better option than having the comp running all day

I had thought of bluetooth but I'm pretty sure i would still need the comp running?

Any way i'll wait till WiFi phones come down to my price range

I love those phones, they were brilliant back in the day!!

Long story short, go down to your local telco store, ask for a phone with WiFi and look at the different options. Naturally price is going to be a large factor, but if it's got WiFi, you can usually set it to "poll" your Email account every X-minutes. Only thing is when you go out of WiFi range and into the Cellular network, it's going to cost you as it'll still keep checking. You can either opt for $1 per-day, or you can go with something like Vodafones $10 for 100MB a month or Telecoms $12 for 120MB a month.

Nope, I was looking at 2nd hand phones and was thinking it must be something thats simple and easy to do these days

Damn, I was hoping it would automatically stop when it went out of range of my router, i'm a real cheapskate!

Oh Well

Thanks all, the advice has been very informative, it looks to be something i will look at in the future when prices are more to my Scottish liking.

839078 2009-12-15 08:05:00 iTouch gets my vote, can listen to music, read a book and check your mail all at once !!

iPhone is the next step though. Vodaphones 100mb deal is a real godsend, mail always available, surf the net, google maps..and the apps !!

start saving man !!

839079 2009-12-15 17:49:00 Yeah limepiles right, about the only solution will be the likes of an iTouch or similar PDA.

Basically they're starting around $299 these days for 8GB, which is *HUGE* when you compare that to the likes of almost ever other PDA which generally comes with around 128MB :p

The iTouch can be setup to receive emails and check every 15 minutes, or with Gmail / Microsoft Exchange you can set it up as an Exchange Account and have it *push* emails to your device. Gmail brought out that functionality only a month or two back, it's awesome!!

Other than that, you could always try turning off all Windows Sounds, then buying some semi-decent $50-odd speakers and turning them up, then setting up a notification so when you receive mail it just plays a sound? Then again, the whole house will know you've got mail, not just a little vibrate in your pocket ;)
