839014 2009-12-13 00:46:00 I’m trying to make a CD Bootable so I can run some diagnostic programmes, however all I seem to be making is coasters. :groan:

I use CDBurnerXP and it has provision to make a disk bootable but seems to need an ISO image with all the necessary boot files for this to happen. It has a choice to load boot files for Win95 – Win 98 & Win ME but not XP. I seems you need an image of XP Boot files of your own to burn to the CD?

Does this make sense to anyone and if so where can I obtain an Image of XP Boot files to let the computer boot from the CD? :thanks

839015 2009-12-13 01:27:00 Here (http://bootdisk.com/) you may need a floppy to extract them tho. It shouldnt matter if theyre 98 or XP boot files. As long as theyre in the root of the cd, it should boot Speedy Gonzales (78)
839016 2009-12-13 03:14:00 They have a boot image available from the CDBurnerXP web site

839017 2009-12-13 04:25:00 I'd suggest making a boot cd with [edited]

will boot any comp up with a "mini" XP OS system, and has virtualy every tool ready to use.

Just under 200 megs, but once downloaded and burnt, you'll prolly never need anything else to boot and repair/retrieve files etc from any computer.

[Mod's comment: unfortunately most of the tools on the suggested CD are illegal copies. It is not a good idea to suggest that particular CD on this forum as it will break forum rules - Thanks]

Unfortunately making a bootable XP CD system is much more complicated than that.

I suggest you download UBCD4Win, then point it to an XP disc. It'll then create a bootable XP system preloaded with a plethora of tools for diagnosing and fixing pretty much anything:p

839020 2009-12-13 20:51:00 Ok, in the end I told CDBurnerXP to just make the disk bootable with files for Win95 – 98 & ME and then burnt the ISO image.

Blow me down but the disk booted fine and run the diagnostic programme ( Mem Test) no problem.

When I think about it, the computer doesn’t know it’s an XP machine until windows starts to load so no problem. CDBurnerXP can make the disk bootable all by itself.

It was the reference to 1.44 Floppys and earlier DOS based systems that confused me.

Never mind, all happiness now.

Thanks everyone.
