In the past 12 months, 35,300 or almost 100 people a day have left for Australia. That is the biggest flood on record and higher than the previous peaks after the 1987 sharemarket crash or in the late 1970s. The exodus in 2007-08 represents a 6.7 per cent increase on the previous year and a 325 per cent increase on the low of 18,100 people who left permanently in 1985-86. The main countries of intended residence for all permanent departures were New Zealand (18.4 per cent), the United Kingdom (17.8 per cent), the United States (9.3 per cent), Hong Kong (7.2 per cent) and Singapore (6.4 per cent). blogs.technet.com Australia is an exceptionally expensive place to live. Australians are taxed much more and pay more for everything. You dont realise until you leave. So I left for two reasons. I left because of a lack of interesting opportunities and because I just wanted a better deal. And I can tell you...even after nearly three months here that nearly everything is cheaper here. Tax is waaayyyy less. Food, retail items, cars, petrol....its all cheaper here....Im loving it! :) |

| 731602 | 2008-12-22 09:44:00 | Why is it never mentioned that the NZ to OZ and reverse moves are partially because of the reciprocal agreement....no visa/work permit etc. required. The only advantage I would gain from taking NZ citizenship is that of being freely able to visit Oz.....if you call that an advantage! Martynz |

Where where is your pride in your country of residence? Good thing about residents though is they can be deported at governor generals pleasure. |

What you are saying (I think) is that although lots of people left NZ last year (and moist years), mainly for Australia, - lots of people also left Australia ! Whilst that might sound encouraging to NZ, the thing is the number of people leaving Australia is far less percentage wise, so it is a big worry for us, but not for them, and how many people arrived in Australia last year ? People will always move around - promotions, job posting, family reasons etc. But a country like NZ cannot continue to lose people (good people) at the rate it has/is. |

I took citizenship because I want to live here not because I want to go to Australia, it was a big thing for me changing from permanent resident to citizen, all I gained was the right to move to OZ if I wanted to but it gives me pride to call NZ my home and to know I'm a citizen of NZ | gary67 (56) | ||

| 731608 | 2008-12-23 00:23:00 | I think if a closer look was taken at the skill-level of NZers moving to Australia you'd find a high percentage of unskilled workers. Like in the movie the Grapes of Wrath, you have a bunch of uneducated Okies moving to California to pick oranges. Quite simply NZ's job market is too small to absorb 100% of unskilled workers whereas Australia's economy is 7-8 times the size of ours and always will be if the population ratios between NZ and Australia remain the same. |
