| 731442 | 2008-12-22 10:02:00 | During the late 60s NZ had a Royal Tour that included The Queen, Prince Phillip Charles and Ann. When the Royal parties departed Auckland International for Australia the RNZAF provided a Guard of Honour. The Guard had bayonets fixed to their SLR Rifles. The guard had been stood easy while waiting for the Royal Party, when a swarm of midges decended on the guard. One airman in exasperation waived his hand across his face to drive away the midges and successfully bayoneted his own hand. The Royal Guard was inspected minutes later by the Queen, minus one member who had become a casualty to a midge attach. |
