732575 2008-12-26 23:15:00 Sony SLRs use the Minolta A-mount system. When Minolta tried to get into the digital SLR business they failed so badly that they sold up to Sony. Just because Sony now calls it the Alpha system doesn't mean it's anything new or special. There are less lenses available for Sony SLRs than Nikon or Canon - and one of the main reasons to choose an SLR over a compact is the fact that you can change lenses.

For my money I would stick with Canon or Nikon - for my money - only because they have been in the camera business for so long and there is such a huge range of lenses available for both brands.

I'm sure that people who have bought Sony Alpha branded cameras are happy with them.

And I'm also sure that reviewers never give a bad review to anything as they're afraid they won't get anything else to review from that manufacturer if they do...

732576 2008-12-27 00:11:00 Not disputing either fact, There are less options for lenses (though still many more then anyone person would ever buy) and it is based on Minolta tech (Though it looks to me like all the features that sold me on the camera were implmented by Sony)

And I agree both points are worth consideration, Though I only knew about the lens issue and decided that was fine by me.

Mind you,the D90 would have been nice.
It is seriously gorgeous.
One thing it does,is to read all the prevailing conditions and give you the best average of 2000 choices in it's memory. The result is stunning.

732580 2008-12-27 06:47:00 I hear Skynet is based on D90 tech.

Something to think about.

732581 2008-12-27 19:31:00 I have always liked the Sony brand and was drawn to the Sony camera as friend has one. Camera salesman told me of the link to Minolta which didnt worry me. He also reasoned that Sony are being very price competitive to get into the market which goes someway to explain the price difference.

Some companies do a wide range of products but IMHO are not great at all of the product ranges they make.

I like Sony Video Cameras but not their normal cameras. I would choose a Nikon SLR over a Sony any day, likewise I would choose a Sony Video Camera over most other brands.

A lot of purchases come down to personal opinion or personal preference, sometimes buying cheaper inferior stuff pays off some times it doesn't. I once bought a Sanyo TV from Warehouse.... big mistake.

Lenses for SLR cameras: Although likes of Tamron and Sigma can fit Canon or Nikon the best Lenses are the same as the camera if you can afford them.

I would personally like this one for my Canon Camera for SuperV8 photography but need to do a bit more saving.

Either of those would be great! However - I suspect they would be really too heavy for me to use successfully. Or perhaps I'm kidding myself in the name of economy... :(

732584 2008-12-28 23:24:00 Nikon and Canon are the are also the two leading pro digital contenders - they are on par with each other and just remember you are buying into a system of lens and accessories, but the most demanding will be satisfied by either one of these. In saying this I have been a Nikon SLR user since 1964, commencing with the original Nikon F. KenESmith (6287)
