732603 2008-12-26 23:25:00 Spectacular high-country! What happened at the end? Is it my imagination or was the road getting rougher towards the end? Was the stop at the end to see the scenery or something more worrying? You obviously survived the traverse, or we wouldn't be able to see this video... johcar (6283)

:horrified

I got me to thinking though - We hear complaints about how poor we are as a country, but with a population of 4 million, we still manage to maintain a road that is probably about as remote as you can get, with reasonable grading, edge markers, other signs, etc., when it is probably travelled by about 2 vehicles a fortnight. I think it demonstrates how lucky we actually are, and also why we possibly aren't as wealthy as some of the other much more densely populated countries that we get compared with.

It wasn't the end. And it was rougher at the top.
He was pointing at a ute coming the other way so we had to inch over at a slightly wider spot and stop and wait. Its also why I removed the audio.......

Then we got into the cloud and it was worse there. Visibility was rather limited.

Then we came down, ride the brakes.....cause I was already in 1st........then it wasn't too bad for the rest, steers in the middle of the road at one point, loads of cattle stops to judder across, but nicer at that part.

732606 2008-12-27 00:22:00 Pretty sweet, Though wider, smoother, flatter and more manicured then I had expected. Metla (12)
732607 2008-12-27 00:32:00 Best to leave it like it is to discourage foreigners from travelling on it.

732608 2008-12-27 00:34:00 Looks a lot tamer than our Lees Valley road down here on which idiots like to do 60kph+ on . Great fun meeting them screaming around a corner and there's a 100m+ sheer drop over the edge just centimetres away .

Have to say that you're a pretty game person to drive that pass . No way would I ever get behind the wheel .

You need to go do Skippers . ;)

732610 2008-12-27 04:13:00 I have been over both Dansey's Pass and the road to Lees Valley (only in and out from the Oxford end, not Whiterock cos my car had 4WD as required, but it didn't have decent clearance so I piked just in case) .

Dansey's Pass is far hairier than Lees Valley at the Oxford end anyway . It probably seems hairier because of the exposure to very long steep drops, and what looks like crumbly edges .

We met a stock truck coming in the opposite direction on one trip over Dansey's Pass . . . We gave way as we were in a small station wagon .

Dansey's Pass is a good short cut from Waipiata to Oamaru, and thence to ChCh . I hate having to go down the Pig Root instead because you are going south east to Palmerston, and then have to make up all that northing again . At least with Dansey's Pass you are going north east most of the time . . .
