731569 2008-12-22 00:09:00 a friend of mine had an old Ford XF boganmobile that had so many problems no one in a sane state of mind would warrant it

2 weeks later it has a warrant and rego on it - its amazing what a small town garage and 2 boxes of beer can do in aiding the greasing of palms to get things to pass eh? :p

731571 2008-12-22 00:29:00 Thought you were talking about an old car. Not.

I used to have some laughs with my 1966 Rover - once it was marked as not having a windscreen washer, cause they couldn't find it.
They always graunched the gears moving it, it had no syncro in 1st.

And that is the point that I am trying to make! These people are not mechanics which is why they could not find the windscreen washer and why they did not realise that some cars do not have synchromesh in 1st. If you were an experienced mechanic you would know that. Even the apprentice would know that!:horrified

So it is obvious from Pctek's story that they are applying 21st century knowledge (from a manual, because they don't know) to 20th century cars. And you are relying on these people to make certain that your car is safe?

I'd rather put my trust in a mechanic.

Hell no. Anyone with an old car relies on themselves to keep it safe!

731574 2008-12-22 01:47:00 Common sense with wof inspectors has generally gone on holiday.
Especially with old cars trucks and buses you are rooted if you get a young mechanic or foreigner (not NZ born) inspector.
Two tricks after the inspection you can find an middle aged NZ born mechanic to argue your case that the young bugger or the foreigner is being a dipstick .
Or do a trick repair, amazing what a wire brush and a black zinc spay can, new nut and split pin will make a worn out component look and feel like new. They will say thats much better lol.
You are buggered with rust repairs but the rules for rust are specific in size and location no arguments there.

731575 2008-12-22 09:52:00 Hi Roscoe

I agree - I trust my mechanic before the WOF monkeys.

Out of curiosity Roscoe, are you are referring to the testing station at the bottom of Onehunga?

I had no end of trouble with them ever since the staff changed - I'd take my car to Honda and they would say there is nothing wrong. When the fellow tested the brakes, he would apply such a tiny amount of pressure and wait for one side to ever so slightly grab and then claim I needed to get them fixed. I recommended he press the brake pedal properly but I think these guys are wannabe traffic cops. Honda couldn't believe they had failed me. I used to want to go to someone who was strict, but I have learned there is strict and ridiculous, so the simple solution is I don't go there any more.....

Andrew

P.S. They also tried to claim a Renault indicator wasn't orange in colour when in fact it was. I understand the indicator bulbs have a covering which deteriorates with time but there was no reasoning with the guy.

731576 2008-12-22 10:15:00 Yes well my Starlet failed its last warrant because there was a tiny stone chip about the size of this dot " . " in front of the drivers face . Aparantly it was distracting to me (the driver) and would cause me to focus on the stone chip and have an accident .
Load of BS .
Aparantly the 100,000 moths that died on my windscreen last night and made the stone chip impossible to find won't distract me . . .

731577 2008-12-22 10:17:00 At Kumeu testing station they let you apply the brakes for the brake test.
A trick is to heat them with medium foot pressure until the needles are matching as best as possible don't be rushed then ram the pedal to the floor. If it does not work after 3 times you really have a brake imbalance problem

And if you fail on 1 (or 2) tyres all you have to do is swap them over .

EG if you fail on rear left tyre, swap it with the rear right tyre (if the RR tyre passed) and 99% of the time they'll only check the one it fails on .

Tho if you get pulled over by a cop you can be fined . (for the bald tyre)
