731513 2008-12-21 22:29:00 common enough these days to reboot the ECU. if the car gets a fault you can stop, reset ECU and drive away untill it gets the fault again.
common way to reset ECU is to unhook the battery.

Don't do that without first finding out what it's complaining all about. You might regret not knowing that you are melting your cat or that the ESC hears the engine knocking and destroying itself and is trying to get your attention before it's broom-time.

And..you cannot "erase" or "reboot" an OBD2 system as it is written in a non-volatile area and taking the battery posts off won't do it either.

OBD1, is re-bootable if you pull the battery-to-ECM fuse; you don't have to disconnect the battery at all and lose all your radio presets and clock settings.

Your car's ECM might give you an automotive BSD if you iggy it long enuff.

Had a late model V8 Ford Explorer(Exploder) in the workshop today, with a melted/broken-up "cat", $NZ10,000 plus GST (12.5 % Sales Tax, SJ) Retail for a new one .

I hope that isn't in real dollars. It's out of sight!

The cat broke from running rich and since it had become incandescent to the point where it melted together and fell apart from the excessive heat, that's what you found.

I bet that the CEL was lit or someone took the bulb out of it burned out or something. This should NOT have happened.

What year is that Exploder? If it is OBD2 or OBD1 it makes a difference in replacement prices and availability.

The worst case I've seen for costs was in a dual exhaust F250 Ford with a solid, one-piece manifold-to-tailpipe system that went for $1,200.00 USD, and I thought that was a raping!

Gads, youse guys get had in NZ.

Ya know, that if I smuggle a cat for that Exploder into NZ, I can become king of that tilted tectonic plate of yours?

731517 2008-12-22 05:45:00 unlike USA our vechiles are not required to be fully OBD2 complaint. a lot of the ones i know of removing battery for long enough time will reset the ecu and loose the codes. real pain when you want to find what was the fault but at least reseting it gets you out of the bush/desert/beach/etc.
any thing majorly broken will just trip the ecu again.

if you think prices here are bad wait till you see aussies!

one really annoying thing i have heard of is the ecu won't let the engine start if the brake taillight fuse is blown. brake is an input to the ecu and without it it won't et motor run :( so be very carefull when connecting trailers up ;)

This I have not seen . I will investigate and try to figure this out if it's true or not .

I DO know that on an Isuzu if the alternator is going bad and adding ripple to the DC-side, the whole vehicle shuts down .

For sure the Isuzu engineers are using either Linux or Polish-Logic in their ECU/ECM wiring: it's 'way beyond Lucas silliness!
