841219 2009-12-19 21:52:00 Like WT said, get the exact model of the mobo Speedy Gonzales (78)
841220 2009-12-19 21:54:00 Ah yep, the model of the mobo....will look into it. qazwsxokmijn (102)
841221 2009-12-20 04:24:00 Right, it's a P5Q-VM. After placing the RAM sticks on DIMM 3 and 4, the system boots and works fine, so I'm assuming the motherboard's RAM slot(s) is/are faulty and is probably a sign of a dying motherboard? He did say one USB port sometimes lose connection.

Looks like a trip to iFocus is in order!

841222 2009-12-20 04:46:00 Ah so I was right. Is he sure its not shorting somewhere if one USB port loses connection? Which port, on the front or back? There's nothing stuck between the mobo and case is there / shorting it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
841223 2009-12-20 04:53:00 Just looked at the board - try this, RAM in slots 1 & 3 , The YELLOW ones, if they are in 1 & 2 it can cause problems.

Regarding the USB - look VERY carefully at the USB ports, ESP the rear ones, make sure the little tabs that are meant to be on top of the USB ports are not actually tucked "inside the port" very east to do if you are not careful.

841224 2009-12-20 05:01:00 I've done that before installed the mobo and screwed it up, then found the bloody tab (from the I/O panel by the ethernet port), is inside / got stuck inside the ethernet port. Not much use there. You cant put the cable in  PITA when this happens. You have to take it out and put it in properly. Then screw it back up again Speedy Gonzales (78)
841225 2009-12-20 05:13:00 Yep, looks like it's the motherboard. Used both RAM sticks in my system and works fine, so that's out of the picture. Tried CPU too just in case. That worked fine. So it seems like it's the RAM slots acting up.

Cheers guys.

841226 2009-12-20 05:16:00 Turn it off pull the plug, take the mobo out. Try the ram in all of the slots. See if it does the same thing Speedy Gonzales (78)

Yep, did that. DIMM 2 (the second yellow one) is definitely dead. DIMM 1 acting up - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So only DIMM 3 and 4 works.

841228 2009-12-20 05:53:00 Try updating BIOS? Maybe it is (a really weird) incompatibility problem...

Though if the USB is falling over as well then probably the board is faulty.. maybe even caused by overheating of the board due to the fool putting the heatsink on badly

I can't talk though, the first time I ever did that I put about 20x more thermal grease on than I needed (think: more is better).. but at least I knew the heatsink was supposed to be ON the CPU!
