732555 2008-12-26 08:49:00 Looking for entry(ish) level SLR and these seem to be where I am at the moment. I really like the D90 nikon but the price difference between this and the other 2 (Canon & Sony) are hard for me to justify.

Can anyone with experience in this industry have any comments as to what would give me best value. I dont mind paying more if I know I am getting a good product and from what I have read the D90 does stand out but again is it worth the extra dollars.

Thanks

732556 2008-12-26 09:09:00 I can not help as I have a Sony which I am happy with.

732557 2008-12-26 09:24:00 bearing in mind I'm a camera nublitt.

I bought the Sony A300, Taken some stunning photo's,and lots of **** ones. Though even the **** ones are might fine.

No idea if its any good or not though the reviews led me to believe its the mutts nuts. Just finished the manual, need to read it again and then start trying to put some of it into practise. Currently using just the auto setting.

One thing that did impress me is how it does an auto-backfill flash, so it lights up the subject if they have the light source behind them.

One thing that hasn't impressed me, I didn't realise the lenses were so...uh..specialised. I bought the single lens kit and its only good for between 5 to 35 feet away from the camera.

I have one of the above and I have no wish to change it.
It would now appear to be discontinued.

732559 2008-12-26 10:24:00 I see Noel leemings have dropped the price of the A300 to $959, That's over 200 less then what I paid for it a couple weeks ago.:lol::lol: Metla (12)
732560 2008-12-26 10:34:00 That is the way of things.
I paid $2500 for my Sony.
And I am not planning to change any time soon.

732561 2008-12-26 11:06:00 The thing to remember with an SLR is that, because you can change lenses, you're buying into a system - not just a camera body.

For my money I would leave the Sony - they bought the licencing from Minolta so you're really getting an older system than that which Nikon or Canon have developed for digital. Also, there is a much smaller range of lenses available for Sony SLRs than are available for Nikon or Canon.

Another thing is that because Nikon and Canon have been making cameras for so long the way their cameras handle is much better - this makes a difference as you don't want to be thinking about anything but what you're seeing when you have the camera to your eye.

But when all is said and done a fabulous camera won't make fabulous photographs. A crappy photographer takes crappy photographs - even if they have a Leica. It's the eye that counts. There are some stunning photographs taken with cellphones if you look around on the net.

732562 2008-12-26 17:23:00 Thanks guys. I know very little about photography but recently have become a bit obsessed since doing a photoshop course and realised the potential. I really hate being in front of a camera so figure the best way to avoid being in a photo is to be behind the camera.

Dean F - I thought that it didnt matter which of the 3 brands I am looking at in regards to lenses as you can get a Sigma lens which will fit. I doubt I would need anything to extravagant as this stage but I would rather have something which will last me a long long time and if this obsession takes hold I can splurge out on fancy lenses at a later stage.

There are some really good Boxing Day specials. This (www.noelleeming.co.nz) is what I am leaning towards. It does have features which I understand that differ from the others. I might have a look at www.dpreview.com one more time.

Thanks

Don't bother with Sony they are not a contender in the SLR market. Canon and Nikon are the two consumer level SLR contenders IMHO. Any Camera Club member will tell you the same.
