732592 2008-12-26 04:34:00 We took a shortcut from Alexandra to Ngapara. Naseby then over Danseys Pass.

I'd say SKippers Canyon, which I have never been on and never will is worse - but I'm not going over Danseys Pass ever again either.

At the top, inside a huge cloud, I was down to 5kph and 1st gear. I never got out of 2nd the entire rest of it.

Husband hung out the window with the camera making movies saying ooh, look, its a 100 miles down, ooh look at that, you're too far to the right etc etc.

Mad sheep raced across in front of us and threw themselves over the side too.

It wasn't actually possible to be too far to the right in my opinion, right was the side away from the nasty drop, and considering most of it is 1 lane, nah......

So now I'm back home, I'll stay here I think.

732593 2008-12-26 04:54:00 Some people get scared going up Te Mata Peak. I can imagine that being worse.

Putting it down as a "must do".

732595 2008-12-26 05:45:00 OK pctec, we are just down the road in Awamoko with our 7 meter x 6 ton motor home, I take it you don't recommend the trip over Dansey's pass :) We did take our motor home up Te Mata peak for a picnic lunch at the top last year...

Have a great New Year everyone.

732597 2008-12-26 08:23:00 Hi Sue.
The signs at the start of the pass warn against heavy vehicles, caravans, trailers. The pass in places doesn't even have a good coating of metal. We came home through the pass twice in the last two years after doing the Otago Rail Trail. The last time we stayed at the old hotel at the start of the pass - great experience and strongly recommended. Magic countryside.

Metla - yes its gravel.

Sue - you'd never make it. Its not too wide in some spots and you'd never steer it round some of the bends. And once you're on it, you can't change your mind.

Scouse - the hotel just up from Naseby? Yeah that was gorgeous. Lovely spot too.

732600 2008-12-26 22:29:00 Ok thanks, we'll give the Pass a miss and find somewhere else to explore tomorrow.

Local farmer has just driven in with a supply of fresh mushrooms in his Ute's tray for the three motor homes here, they are bigger than most dinner plates. Yummy :) Some Neat people in the South Island.
