732281 2008-12-24 10:53:00 Hi, I thought of getting a PC end of 2009 when I saw iCore equipment are still expensive. 3rd generation SATA coming soon. Plus in that time RAM and HDD would get cheaper for the quantity.

Realistically given the past, what would one see in terms of price reductions by then?

Now I am thinking if I should get my own PC right now cos .. 2hours before Christmas Day (12am), because I am using a family member's PC, it is only a 80GB and the partition set up for my pictures are around 20 or 30GB which I only have 3GB left. I was going through and clearing files, I thought that folder in My Pictures was a one off manual backup I did for Adobe Lightroom but in fact it was my LR Database file :horrified now I have lost all my keywords and I am off Boxing Day morning for a trip so I really wanna get it done tomorrow Christmas Day on the PC for several hours. Fortunately the pictures are still there.

If I do get it, Intel Q6600, 2 or 4GB RAM, 2x 500GB Seagate, maybe a 3rd Seagate for external off PC backup, 9600 GF for some casual gaming and a Dell 24" Widescreen Ultrasharp panel. No floppy and no DVD for the time being. I can network that and I don't use it much, would like to get Blue Ray Writers thou when they are more affordable. Pretty much the box unit is around $1,000 not much more.

Regards.

732282 2008-12-24 11:30:00 You mean Core i7?

It has only just come out. Which is why its expensive right now

Well blu-ray players are pretty cheap. Just over 300. But burners are still around 420-430 by the looks of it

732283 2008-12-24 17:43:00 Waiting for prices to come down before you buy is always problematical.

If you wait for a year and buy, then in one years time after that, there will be some other new technology and lower prices/better specs again. It will never stop.

So the thing is, do you wanna wait ? Can you put up with what you are using ? Have you got the cash ?

Its your decision, but personally I think you would better off with a nice new machine
now.

What sort of pictures ?

732284 2008-12-24 20:14:00 Pictures - it is off my digital SLR, 5,500 images, lost all the Lightroom settings cos I deleted that file/folder. Now I have the original unedited RAW files ... all the editing is gone. Apart from a handful if I exported to TIF or JPEG.

I need a new one maybe get it after the new year now cos I am back then .... cos after this trip I just don't have enof space on their PC - 3GB left on that partition. LR takes 20secs just to preview an image. Cos it is not my PC you don't get customed to their PC dunno where things are and stuff ... you have their stuff there ... and you are merely just working on what you get bit like working in the many corners if you know what I mean.

Yeah I was thinking that if iCore becomes cheaper at least I could get iCore while a lower spec'd one. 8 Core shold fly via Photoshop and LR ....
