840411 2009-12-16 23:29:00 Our server (actually a bog-standard PC running a heavily stripped down Windows XP Pro) gives out a different IP address to the rest of the computers on the network. When I enter its IP address into Firefox, nothing happens, but when the "proper" address is entered, it takes us to our router setup page (which I want for now). What's causing this? pcuser42 (130)
840412 2009-12-16 23:34:00 Can you give an example of the addresses being given out, and the addresses of the "Server" and router? What is providing DHCP services on the "Server"? Sounds like maybe the router is doing it instead. inphinity (7274)
840413 2009-12-16 23:59:00 XPP is setup as dhcp server?.....hows that?....I'm with inphinity! SolMiester (139)
840414 2009-12-17 00:25:00 Server: 118.93.181.204
My PC: 125.236.191.36
Router: 125.236.191.36

EDIT: I checked the server settings, it says the DHCP server is 192.168.1.1, i.e. the router.

840415 2009-12-17 00:29:00 So your server is on an ihug connection & your router (and your PC) is on a xtra connection?
Are they both also on the same local LAN?
fred_fish (15241)
840416 2009-12-17 00:46:00 The server is on the same LAN as all the other PCs, i.e. accessing the Internet through the router, but it has a different IP address. pcuser42 (130)
840417 2009-12-17 00:50:00 Well something is seriously borked.

>nslookup 118.93.181.204
Name: 118-93-181-204.dsl.dyn.ihug.co.nz
Address: 118.93.181.204

Where is it getting that IP from?

What are you trying to achieve?
fred_fish (15241)
840418 2009-12-17 00:56:00 I want to be able to enter the IP address and (router permitting) access the server. I already have a script that allows for the dynamic IP address.

I'll check the settings once it's finished repartitioning (increasing Windows partition to 10GB from 4GB).

840419 2009-12-17 01:02:00 You need to give a bit more info about your environment, as it is making zero sense at the moment.

How can you have a server with an IP that resolves to an ihug dsl line behind a router on a xtra jetstream connection?

That's what I want to know.

Also, I'm talking about Internet IP addresses, i.e. the one sent out to the world.
