733982 2009-01-01 19:09:00 Dear all,
I was thinking of throwing away a cup when the idea of recycling it came across my mind. Can porcelains cups be put into the green recycling bins?

Cheers :)

733984 2009-01-01 21:37:00 Speaking as an ex-potter, I can say with some authority that porcelain or any other type of ceramic material can only be re-used in the sense that it can be broken up and used for landfill, or sometimes ground down to grit or powder and used as a stiffener for fresh clay - although that rarely happens. Raw clay can be recycled as dry clay will revert to mud if water is added, but the process of firing changes the chemical makeup and removes that possibility. Some people do recycle pottery by taking broken pieces and making mosaics from them, but I guess that is "re-use" rather than "recycle".

If you want more info about clay and clay processes, you can check out the Auckland Studio Potters website (www.ceramics.co.nz) (a small thing, but mine own...):o
