842488 2009-12-23 05:55:00 I've only got to purchase my ripjaw's ram for my Project Black Thunder until it's complete, I think I will then proceed to buy a KVM Switch, What would be the best one for around/under $150.. as I only learnt about this device a few days ago it's all new to me, can be hardware or software based. 842489 2009-12-23 06:39:00 I Hardware is best. How would you have a software based one? I have the Rextron KNV104, its very good only gripe is that it is not USB.
Dont know about any others but do recommend that you get one with USB instead of PS/2

842490 2009-12-23 07:46:00 we use one here and its alot tidyer than before.
its a 2 port aten (can also get 4 port) from pb tech.
will output 1920 x 1200 and also sound. usb mouse/keyboard.
from memory around $90? cables included

I have used sort of software kvm before, when the cursor went off the right hand side of monitor "A" it would appear on the left of monitor "B" which was on a different PC and could control that pc that way. more of a km switch than a kvm, as needed a monitor hooked up to each pc.

842491 2009-12-23 19:10:00 hey mate, I have one of these www.dse.co.nz sitting in my wardrobe that I would be happy to donate to Project Black Thunder as a Christmas present for ya.

PM me if you want it or, if not, its free to any other good home.

842492 2009-12-24 06:08:00 I use a KVM in order to minimise the clutter on my desk, and to avoid the confusion that happens when trying to operate 2 computers via 2 keyboards and 2 mice!

I totally endorse your decision to go KVM. I love them!

However, like everything with computers, there is a constant evolution of the plugs that are being used.

Used to be the big round plugs for KB's, and the D shaped Com ports for mice.
Then PS2, now USB, and now there's a transition happening with the video connectors, as we drift towards digital.

Any KVM you buy now will either limit your future upgrade options, or be limited in how much of your old gear it will support.

Also very well worth considering is the option to include audio in the switch, so you only need one set of speakers as well... or that one connection to the home entertainment system.

Mine is hardware based, only switching between 2 computers via a double-press of the Ctrl key. The ONLY TIME this is ever a problem is with games that are configured to use Ctrl for the likes of Fire / Jump.
Simply re-configuring the game is the easy solution... unless you have a passion for using that key.
