842384 2009-12-22 08:50:00 Hi Team

FF has been nagging me for a while to install an update to 3.0.16 (I'm currently running 3.0.15) but he update always fails. No reason is given for the failure and the message only appears after FF tries to do the update unbidden. It doesn't appear after I try a manual update, but that fails as well. This is my old W2K box which I recently did an full OS reinstall on after a major crash.

Any ideas why it might not be installing?

3.0.15 is working fine, and I'm only trying to update in case there are security enhancements. I see that V3.5 is now available but I'm wary of trying that in case it doesn't like W2K.

Further, if I abandon 3.0.15/6 and install V3.5 off the PCW DvD, does it differ markedly from 3.01x and will it pick up all my current settings? I can't be bothered reconfiguring a browser this close to Xmas.

Cheers

842385 2009-12-22 08:57:00 According to the site 2k should work with 3.5.6. Just uninstall 3.0.1.6 leave the settings there (dont tick the option). Then install 3.5.6. One reason why installing may not work is some version or the latest version of windows installer isnt installed (www.microsoft.com). It maybe required for FF to install (it is for some programs). Does 2K have event viewer? I cant remember. See what that says, if it uses it. Is SP4 on it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
842386 2009-12-22 21:14:00 Thanks Speedy

No, SP4 is not installed yet, it is lined up and ready to go but I didn't want to take the risk of blowing productivity after my outage, but I guess with the Xmas break approaching I don't need to worry so much now so I'll set it in motion.

I've been so busy catching up after the outage that I haven't even got my network up yet, much to the disgust of my kids who relied on it quite a lot for printing etc.

I'll uninstall FF then load 3.5 off the PCW DvD and update it as necessary. Does it not simply load over the top like other updates?

I'm assuming that when I find the uninstall button it will offer the option to retain all settings?

Cheers

842387 2009-12-22 21:39:00 It should install over the top (it does with 3.5.x etc). Dont know about the 3.0.x versions. I havent installed the 3.0x versions. If it installs to program files / mozilla firefox, it'll probably install over it. It'll give you an option (well it does in 3.5x) before you uninstall it fully, if you want to keep settings. It MAY do the same thing with 3.0x. Again tho, I've never used 3.0x.

The version on the CD is probably out of date now (if its not 3.5.6), which is the latest version. I would say you would have to install SP4 tho, or some update before it installs properly.

842388 2009-12-24 02:25:00 Just a quick check before I set the wheels in motion; the copy of W2K SP4 that I have on my desktop ready to go is SP4express_EN.exe so is this the full update including previous service packs?

That was what I was looking for, but I downloaded this a month or two back so I thought I'd better be safe than sorry.

Cheers

842389 2009-12-24 02:28:00 Umm no you'll have to stay online to get the rest of SP4 with that. This is the full install (www.microsoft.com) 129 MB Speedy Gonzales (78)
842390 2009-12-24 10:33:00 Somebody should have a cd copy close to you, i still have a couple, much better than the dlds .

Thers a utility/patch needed for later versions of avg too, and you may need the dot net 2 patch the xp one works .

thers a set of sata drivers that can be slippstreamed in the install cd with sp4 to enable simple install of 2k in dual core sata machines as well .

842391 2009-12-24 10:38:00 I've got most of the 2k updates (well 867mb) lol. So should be. I've got most of XP 32/64 bit, / Vista 32/64 bit, and win 7 32/ 64 bit updates as well. Speedy Gonzales (78)
842392 2009-12-24 10:53:00 the disk finalls 2k sp4 finall, and xp sp3 finall seem to have a lot of bits that get "missed" in download sets.

got an ultimate oem sp1 64 dv, but havent got vista UGH service pack alone sp1 or 2 loose on genuine ms cd/dv or genuine ms iso yet.

dont know if they will be needed end 2010 should see 7 usable and stable.

confused as to how thyer going to handle xp activation after 2011, or will they put all the codes into gen release.

I would not have though so as vista UGH uses the same code sys and after you supply the code on personal activation (which I allways force) they allways ask which product xp or UGH? are you activating.

842393 2009-12-24 10:59:00 XP is supported till 2014. Its only 2k, that wont be supported after July next year. What do you mean missed?? There were a LOT of updates after SP4 and SP3. Speedy Gonzales (78)
