2009-12-22 00:54:00 | Hi all. Having problems with my daughters (almost) new laptop - it wont start Vista ! Everything had been going OK and it was closed down normally, hasn't been dropped or bumped, etc. From power on it goes to the Vaio screen then into Vista startup - i.e. the lines going across the bottom of the screen. From there it goes into "Repair your computer mode" and sits there for hours with the fan going off and on every two minutes or so. I'm able to get into advanced boot options via F8 at start-up and have tried safe mode start etc, and have been able to get System Recovery Options screen - Tried Startup Repair and System Restore - nothing. Also tried Memory diagnostic tool - all seems OK. At one stage a blue screen with a lot of writing came up but all I could see was something about memory dump at the bottom of the screen - wasn't able to pause it long enough to read it. It's still under warranty so can't open anything up, don't want to try a Windows complete PC Restore if it wipes saved files (school stuff) and nobody going to look at it before Santa comes ..... if anyone has any ideas, I'd certainly appreciate some help. Thanks in advance ... Dave.

2009-12-22 01:57:00 | If you can boot up in safe mode then disable auto restart Right Click my computer>properties>advanced system settings on the left pane>Select "settings" under startup and recovery>Untick auto restart www.nirsoft.net Download that utility, and it'll analyse dumps and give you the option to create a logfile...copy and paste it here. Have you tried running a chkdsk /r in command prompt? Blam

2009-12-22 04:09:00 | Just tried restarting in safe mode with command prompt to do a chkdsk ..... loaded windows drivers up to crcdisk.sys then stopped ... not sure what else to try. | SP8's (9836) | |
2009-12-22 04:12:00 | Do it when you are at the System Recovery screen in command prompt. If that doesn't work, then you'll probably need to grab your data off and reinstall, as it looks like quite a few critical system files are infected. Blam

2009-12-22 21:29:00 | Still having fun (not) with this problem. I'm able to boot into safe mode with command prompt and it takes me to Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe Changed into C: and tried to run chldsk/r and it tells me it cannot run because it's in use by another process. chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first ... would you like to force a dismount Y/N It's been too long an I haven't kept up with technology .... can anyone ofer any assistance in what steps I should take now.

2009-12-23 03:46:00 | Finally got things sorted ..... although I might just put up a HJT Log after I've scanned for viruses etc, just to make sure there's nothing nasty hiding somewhere. Thanks for those who helped me out and hope you all have a great festive season. Regards to all, Dave.
