841450 2009-12-20 17:51:00 Hello everyone. I have an Asus M3N78 Pro Mobo and i'm trying to buy a new video card. I've been looking at this card:

www.tigerdirect.ca

And i think i am going to purchase it. However, i am just wondering, even though my motherboard does not support DDR3 in the DIMM sockets, can i still use this card, knowing that the Video Memory is GDDR3?

841451 2009-12-20 18:44:00 The memory on a videocard has nothing to do with memory that you install. They're 2 different things. You can use any videocard you want on a mobo. As long as it fits. You could put a videocard with DDR3, or DDR5, on a mobo that uses DDR2, or DDR3 Speedy Gonzales (78)

Your graphics card goes into the PCI-E slot. Not into the dimms.

I was just making sure that it would work properly, after all i don't want to buy something that dosen't work. Thanks guys.

Then you don't know the difference.

841455 2009-12-20 23:21:00 I knew that the video card did not go in the DIMMs but was unsure if VRAM can be incompatible depending on the type of RAM your motherboard can support. Sorry for the misunderstanding. LarsJohann (13010)
841456 2009-12-21 00:29:00 Seems a logical thing to be confused about but, as has been pointed out, it will work just fine.

Graphics cards are pretty much mini-computers in themselves, so the memory and processor are all looked after on-board. All you have to worry about is whether you have a PSU that can support it (whether it has the right number of outputs) and if your MoBo has PCI-Ex16 buses (It almost definitely does if it's less than 4-5 years old).

That's an awful price for that card. It's not a great card and you should be able to get better for cheaper. Go for a 4850 is my suggestion.

841457 2009-12-21 01:51:00 Yeah 4850s rock. ~$160 NZD atm. pablo d (15490)
841458 2009-12-21 02:53:00 +1 for the 4850!

4850 and the 9800GTX have similar performance, but the 4850 is cheaper, so therefore better value.

841459 2009-12-24 21:48:00 You guys are talking about the ATI Radeon 4850 right? You guys say it is better then the Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX? Should i get the ATI card instead?

How about this card? www.tigerdirect.com
