Think about how many flights come and go from Auckland airport every day, versus how many accidents happen. Compared with trains, buses, cars, boats, the rate is virtually zero. To coin the old phrase..."Flying is the safest way to fly" :banana Ken |

The thing that really matters is whether the manufacturers and Aircraft Licencing Authorities address the problems properly when they arise. All this aside, human error is still the major cause of aircraft accidents. Incidently, QANTAS has become a media target, with virtually every incident, minor or major, getting a press report after they elected to outsource aircraft major servicing in Singapore. |

Not without reason. In our case, in 2000 we were held up in Auckland for nearly an hour while tech blokes fixed an onboard electronics problem. The linking flight to Cairns was held back at Brisbane for all of us and we rushed from one airplane to another only to be disembarked as that airplane had a hydraulic fault. That was a 3hr wait in the airport as they had to take a unit off another airplane as they had no spares in Brisbane. QANTAS bought us lunch that day in the form of a voucher for a food shop in the airport. (Got brownie points for that.) A QANTAS techie I was talking to said they seemed to have quite a rash of problems during the previous year and was quite embarassed about it all, and totally pissed off with the company because of it. Mind you, the Aussie service blokes screwed QANTAS and Ansett (Which was one of the reasons for Ansetts demise.) I believe the total $cost per man hour was nearly twice that of Air New Zealand. Probably why they ended up losing their contract. Ken |

Much of their maintenance is outsourced (done cheaper) to Asia Re the Airbus incidents over Western Australia (I think there have been 2 or more) someone said they other it is near a US spy station. That may be upsetting the planes electronics. |

What do you want? engineers with 30 yrs plus experience on the most modern planes of the day or some ex air force peasant who worked on MIG15 and 17s. Singapore fine but Malaysia and Commie China are dodgy as in heavy plane maintenance. We sent Lycoming aircraft engine from Cessna 172 to Singapore for recon it come back better than new. |
