842420 2009-12-22 20:32:00 Hi all, boss is looking at new lappy for daughter (spoiled kids!)
Anyway she is looking at HP Pavillion DV6-2018 from Leeming, however I'm not a big fan of consumer class HP, only business. However I think she want better graphic and bigger HDD.
The DV6 has 2.1Ghz DC AMD, 4Gb ram, ATi4530 512 card and 320Gb drive. Has a nice 15.6 widescreem and comes with HP Photosmart printer, wireless mouse and flash drive so at $1600, its a great package really.

So, I would like to look at some other options, her Dad would like a netbook for her, so not sure....I personally like Toshiba's, ASUS are quite good consumer lappys....

What would you guys recommend, and we will keep the price around $1600, a little more is ok!

842422 2009-12-22 20:47:00 I agree, don't touch the HP/Compaq consumer range of laptops, see way too many of them here in the workshop, usually a dead mainboard.
Have a look at the new Toshiba Satellite L500 range, nice laptops, perhaps a bit much Toshiba crap on them but that's easily removed.

842423 2009-12-22 21:12:00 Agree HP consumer line is not too reliable. Toshiba business laptops have an extremely low failure rate, and I can back that up from experience. Not sure re Toshiba consumer products though.
One of my main whines to the Toshiba guys was the amount of crud they put on their machines, but a new image (in a corporate environment anyway) soon fixes that.
I did look a the DV6 recently - the graphics mainly got me going, seemed like a nice machine with good specs.
There are just so many options out there now in the higher-end consumer range, I think I would take weeks to decide!

842424 2009-12-22 21:15:00 There is no denying the DV6 (on paper) is excellent value for money, and I haven't seen any die yet, but I still don't trust them.

+1 for a new Tosh L500.

842425 2009-12-22 22:27:00 Doesnt look like the L500 chassis comes with a web-cam?, how can you leave out a web-cam on today's notebooks? SolMiester (139)
842426 2009-12-22 22:34:00 The ones we've got here have webcams... :illogical

Um... who really needs a webcam fixed into a notebook?

PS - what's with your avatar Sol... it'd be a lot better if you had an image of the earlier zigzag with the guy having a smoke in his mouth.
