2009-12-22 07:54:00 | Clone the IP and do all sorts of "nasty or illegal" things if they know what they are doing, then if the person gets caught, it will be looked into who had that IP address at the time - and the "real" owner can be accused of the crimes so to speak. Even if it wasn't them. OR as per here, the Mods can see what a persons IP address is, so if they got banned for example and made up a new name - coming from the same IP --- Well the rest is obvious really ;)

How does that work and what exactly do they do? |

2009-12-22 08:06:00 | The last time I found one, was when nortons, when I had it, traced an ip (from some wannabe hacker), that tried to hit me with a trojan. I traced it to Oz, sent the log to the ISP and byebye :p That was the end of them | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |

2009-12-22 08:31:00 | To be honest I don't know how to clone it, but I know its possible, years ago I had What was then Paradise call me accusing me of doing all sorts of nasty things -- WTF !!!! They said it was coming from my static IP address -- errrr NO --- They said the complaints were tracked to my IP, someone had somehow used it. The week in question I could prove I wasn't even in the country at the time, and they saw I had switched off the modem at a certain time on a thursday night, then my IP got active again around 3.30 am two days later ( like I'm gonna fly back from Aussie to turn on the modem- and no one else was home) , so they reissued me another static IP and it stopped from my address - didn't ever find out what happened after that. End of story really.

2009-12-22 10:29:00 | Similar to the way you spoof MAC addresses I suppose Yet another reason why the "3 strikes and you're disconnected" idea is stupid, if people fake your IP address...

2009-12-22 10:34:00 | Well, outgoing IP packets can be rewritten with whatever IP address you want (that's how NAT works) but if you insert someone else's IP all the return packets will go there, so AFAIK it is not possible to have a complete transaction with a spoofed IP. It can leave your IP in server logs as having made a request, but the spoofer will not get any data back. The other thing about someone knowing your (static) IP is if they are trying to get YOU they know which machine to point their scripts at :)

2009-12-22 22:08:00 | Yes, scary isn't it. But the relavent passage is: "So it is horrifyingly trivial for ANY computer with access to an Ethernet LAN" An attacker does not get that by having your public IP and ARP cache poisoning does not work on routed IP networks (ie internet). Keep your wireless LAN secured & your ethernet jackpoints surveilled & you are fine. Use a good VPN or SSH2 tunnel when on public wifi LAN's. And a tinfoil hat, just to be sure... :D
