| 736418 | 2009-01-08 19:31:00 | Was visiting Fox and Franz last week and watched as tourist after tourist went past the safety barriers to get a closer look at the Glaciers. I remember thinking at the time that they don't realise what danger they're putting themselves in and now two of them are dead. Within a few days there will no doubt be more people ignoring the signs so I guess it will happen again one day. Well worth the visit though and you get a great view from behind the barriers, and the hot pools at Franz are superb!! |

But the observant among us will have noticed photographs, on show on the viewing platform, of the glacier over the past 100 years showing the glaciers advancing and retreating. There was no panic associated with retreating glaciers during those times.:illogical | Roscoe (6288) | ||

When we climbed, we went with guides, you could hear the awesome cracking and crashing of falling ice. There were the warning notices everywhere. No, wait! Don't they only apply to other people? On a visit to White Island, we were given strict instructions where we could and couldn't go. A few moments later we saw some clown heading directly to the 'no-go' area. The should have left him on the island to test his walking on water skills to get back to the mainland. |

| 736425 | 2009-01-08 21:34:00 | Global warming is the boggest load of BS next to 9/11 . That put tabasco in the stew . . . :D It's not so much the fact that global warming is a confirmed fact, it's more the people who are convinced that we are causing it! Don't be silly! Since 1850, it has been estimated, we have lofted about 100 billion tonnes of extra carbon into the air, a total that increases by about 7 billion tonnes each year . Sounds a lot but it's not all that much as nature, through belching of volcanoes and the decay of plants, sends 200 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, nearly thirty times as much as we do . While it is agreed that we should not pollute the atmosphere as we do, our contribution to global warming is minimal . And if you have a look at the past you will see that the earth has been warmer, and cooler, than at present, many times . It's a continual cycle . |

| 736427 | 2009-01-08 23:34:00 | darwin was right!! Minister of Conservation (commonly known as Minister of Silly Walks) now says DOC will have to change the way it administers these places... Another attempt to legislate against stupidity it seems. With all due respect I am sure we all feel for the family and friends of the 2 brothers and offer our sympathy to them. I feel we are commenting in general, not specifically to these 2 young fellas demise. Ken |
