735788 2009-01-07 19:38:00 The mods (as some of you are aware) have been discussing and testing use of images on the forum boards. I know a lot of you would like to see/use embedded images in the forum, and I'm also aware that some of you would rather not, due to load times etc.

This poll is just to gauge interest in having images on pressF1, so please state your preference and add any comments you feel useful as replies.

Please note that if we were to have images here, it would be moderated in the sense of how large images could be and obviously how appropriate they are.

vote away!

735789 2009-01-07 19:41:00 I prefer going to a website that has them uploaded :) davidmmac (4619)
735790 2009-01-07 20:05:00 Wouldn't be a problem, some other forums allow peoples Signatures to contain a Small Banner - or sometimes a Small Image /Gif - Similar to the Smilies but a little bigger, about the size of the aviators .

key word SMALL.

735791 2009-01-07 20:06:00 It could severely restrict those on dial up and yes there are still people out there on dial up. Not me. However I do believe it would make lots more work for the mods so voting against it.If it gets the go ahead pictures would have to be kept not only small but also optimized for the web gary67 (56)
735792 2009-01-07 20:24:00 I think it's a great idea - simply have an option to turn them off in the CP for dial up users, and make a (300kb? 500kb?) file size limit to stop silly people uploading 4mb .bmp screenshots. :D wratterus (105)
735793 2009-01-07 20:39:00 If your talking about attachments then you could force thumbnails.

If your talking about displaying pictures hosted elsewhere then damned if I know what control your forum configuration allows....

Either way, I'm all for it. Dialup users need to eat some reality pie, The web in all its forms has moved towards a more media integrated model over the last few years, Look at the sheer weight of advertising on this page as a prime example.

Nubs uploading a 4mb picture need to be thrashed to an inch of their lives as thats just retarded crap.

735794 2009-01-07 20:44:00 uh, I freakin hope I didn't accidentally vote no in this poll. Metla (12)
735795 2009-01-07 20:52:00 People are going to be sensible enough not to upload dodgy pictures. wratterus (105)
735796 2009-01-07 20:54:00 It's time for images. Biggles (121)
735797 2009-01-07 21:01:00 OK - as I see it, we have three kinds of user here:

registered users - logged in
registered users - not logged in
casual forum browsers (registered or not, who are not logged in) .

The default view could be "No embedded images displayed" for non-logged in or non-registered users .

And if registered users had the option in their CP to turn on embedded images, then dial-up forum users (registered ones) wouldn't have to worry about load times .

I agree with Metla - the interweb has changed over the last few years and there is more of an expectation that a user gets a full-on media experience .

File size would need to be managed - not only the total MBs (I'd suggest a maximum of 2MB), but also the maximum pixel height and width (otherwise the image can play merry hell with the layout of the page) . . .

Would embedding You-tube video in a thread be an option?
