843220 2009-12-26 22:04:00 i have built my new PC but i am using a HDD drive from my previous PC that is formatted as a D drive, my question is when i put in the fresh copy of windows in will it ask me to reformat the drive to C drive for the OS or do i have to format the drive manually before i can install the OS and if so how do i do this? smithinator (15240)
843221 2009-12-26 22:07:00 You do it during the setup, (like previous versions of windows), once it gets to the setup screen in Win7, click on install. Then highlight the partition / options or something, then format c. Or if you want to start all over again, delete all partitions, then recreate them (with whatever size). Then reinstall windows Speedy Gonzales (78)

843223 2009-12-26 22:19:00 Since the Old drive was also the OS original drive - I'd suggest you disconnect it from the system, and install the new OS on the drive you want,it will wipe any data on that drive, then later once up and going, then reconnect the Old drive, which will be seen as a separate drive.

If you don't and you are installing Windows 7, it will see the old drive and try to make it a dual boot setup - giving options on start-up to start the new OS or the Old, and since the Old OS was in different hardware, if it were started/booted it more than likely will BSOD as it has the wrong hardware.

843225 2009-12-26 22:35:00 the drive im using doesn't have any os on it its just a basically empty drive with a few vid files on it that i dont need and i am only using a single HDD so in this case i just follow the steps after inserting the os disk?

Yes. It will examine the hard drive then give you some options, including partitioning and formatting, which can be a good idea depending on the hard drive's size. I would recommend doing a full format which will take longer than a quick format but bad sectors, etc will be dealt with.
