| 842923 | 2009-12-25 01:29:00 | VCR turning up its toes, with a semi-disabled partner and the prospect of a (approximately) 40 inch LCD on the horizon I am looking at a full-on multimedia type solution. preferably with multiple recording of programs while viewing, video discs plus internet(downloads, or realtime{if the connection improves})+ MP3s, Radio and digital photos. In addition we live in the country, reception is not great so Freeview satellite seems a good option, and possibly Sky. Doing a bit of Googling seems to turn up a lot of sad stories of inadequate hardware and software, producing sad results. I am not looking at HD at the moment(freeview), but want to keep it on the horizon. What I am looking for is successful solutions, combinations that work, I'm a bit geeky and know when I'm out of my depth( after making all the usual mistakes!). So how successful is your multimedia solution? What would you do differently? What was the difficulty level? |

| 842924 | 2009-12-25 06:16:00 | Depends on how much you want to spend. I'm just using this PC with a USB freeview DVB-T tuner and it streams to an Xbox. Where you can add pics/vids, and TV. Then watch whatever. Its good enough for me. Saves me spending up large, on something I dont really need (a box for freeview) and a bigger LCD monitor. I wouldnt bother with freeview HD, if you want / use satellite. Since,it doesnt support HD. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||
| 842925 | 2009-12-25 06:30:00 | We have a cheap freeview decoder hooked to an ex sky dish (no HD in Nelson) it has a USB on the front and we can transfer stuf to a flash drive or Ext HDD and then play it on the TV. TV is just a cheap warehouse CRT type. It works good for now | gary67 (56) | ||
| 842926 | 2009-12-25 08:48:00 | Hi Speedy, I'm still at the getting my head around this Digital MM stuff, is your Xbox acting as a player? Can you record more than one program at a time? What software do you use? Most of the programs my wife watches have similar time slots and are on pretty late, for her. Since its better than the program that the tuner came with (it may have been the crap videocard I had - I've changed it since to a 512mb card, it maybe better). May try the program out tomorrow. Nope its only a single tuner / not dual or triple (if you can get triple). But you can add up to 7 tuners (I think) if you use media center. Then you could record up to 7 channels. The xbox is an extender (of media center). You have to add it (as an extender) thru media center / configure it first. Then add vids / songs / pics etc. |

| 842928 | 2009-12-26 07:48:00 | Dedicated PC with multiple tuners seems to be the best solution. rather the a store brought system, because it is adaptable and has more options. Sorry to harp on about the Xbox but I presume it is an optional extra, and I can connect with some sort of software directly to the TV to play recorded programs. Unfortunately TV is not my bag and I seem to have slipped into some soft of time warp on the technology. Most of my Googling has left me in "catchup mode" trying to get the BIG picture. | PPp (9511) | ||
| 842929 | 2009-12-26 08:03:00 | i have the xbox360 set up as a media center extender. this is how i've got it set up 360 connected to tv 360 connected via ethernet cable to modem/router set up extender on 360 and pc. its a basic idea of what it is put video/music/pictures in respective folders more info here (www.xbox.com) more detailed instructions here (support.xbox.com) |
