Therefore if you are not getting any signal out of the rear jacks, you either have a software configuration problem, or a faulty board

I would suspect the configuration of the software first, with the new HD Audio chips you can usually use any jacks for anything and turn any of them on or off

843335 2009-12-27 05:44:00 Did you install the ASUS audio drivers, or get them from windowsupdate??

Lately the ASUS drivers have been pretty crappy. Well for Vista and Win7. Their drivers are louder than the ASUS ones.

843336 2009-12-27 05:52:00 If you use Windows Update to give you drivers and it's broken now, it wouldn't surprise me. Windows Update has a habit of breaking things where drivers are concerned.

As for Asus, their drivers will be out of date most probably.

Since your board uses the Realtek ALC887 sound chip, just get the latest drivers from Realtek themselves (www.realtek.com.tw)

843337 2009-12-27 06:52:00 Yeah I had windows update, stopped it today. Thanks Agent, will try it now Mister (15201)
843338 2009-12-27 07:31:00 Damn. Still got the fuzz. :S Mister (15201)
843339 2009-12-27 07:47:00 If youve installed the realtek drivers, reboot. Then change the settings under sounds in control panel. Then you'll have to figure out why the rear sound isnt working Speedy Gonzales (78)
843340 2009-12-27 08:49:00 I always had the Realtek sound program. I just updated it. Mister (15201)
843341 2009-12-28 03:59:00 Ok, so I got the back ports working. And there's no squealing or fuzz. But only when playing music every like 10 seconds, I get this random crackle. No where near as annoying as the squealing or fuzz

Edit: This is just happening in itunes, media player it's fine. So I'll just use that.

Thanks all for the help

843342 2009-12-28 04:25:00 I had weird crackling problems once myself when I upgraded to Windows Media Player 11... Uninstalled it, went back to WMP10, no problem.

I don't think I ever worked out why...
